Product Information

Designed and hand-carved by Ghanaian artisan Rapheal L. Commey, this wall mask is an exquisite work of art. The brown sese wood face is embellished by two plates of aluminum that are painted blue and patterned with a circle motif. Etchings on the forehead and around the eyes add beautiful intricacy to the face, and an African style drum at the top of the mask completes the design. The artisan calls the mask Mi, which means "drum" in the Ga language.

Story Behind The Art -
My name is Raphael Commey and I was born in Accra in 1989. My friends describe me as having good judgment, working hard and being a good communicator. When I was in elementary school, I first became interested in wood carving. I was very good at art and enjoyed the stories behind each piece, which inspired me. After finishing junior high school, I wasn't able to continue my studies so I decided to venture into carving. I learned to finish a carved piece and became skilled at it. I studied with a teacher and have now taught two others. I mastered woodcarving and improved on my finishing skills. Once, a friend told me I would never prosper. Now, I look back at those difficult times, think about how much better things are today, and laugh. Starting on my own wasn't that difficult because I obtained most of my working materials during my apprenticeship. I had almost everything I needed by the time I set up my workshop. My favorite part of the creative process is polishing the finished piece. When people purchase my works, this inspires me to create more and new designs. My hope is to have a happy family and become a well-known artist.
