Peru's Cesar Gonzalez carves this white onyx sculpture by hand with amazing detail, adding a sodalite beak and big glass eyes. This vigilant owl is perched on a pyrite rock with its iron talons as the sculpture has a black onyx base.

Story Behind the Art:
Peruvian artisan Cesar Gonzales has worked as a stone carver since 1988. Gonzales works with serpentine, rose manganese, calcite, celestite, red jasper, mottramite, chrysocolla, rhodochrosite and quartz. 'I work in stone because of the beautiful things that can be made with each kind,' he says. 'I like stone's naturalness and purity of color.'
