Story Behind the Art:

For generations, Tibetans have treasured rugs both for their utilitarian and decorative purposes, drawing inspiration from geometric patterns, auspicious symbols, real and mythical creatures, and elements of the natural world to create visually stunning and functional designs. However, it wasn't until after the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959, leading to the dispersion of Tibetan communities in Nepal and Tibet, that Tibetan rug weaving experienced a critical revival on the commercial front. By the 1970s, Tibetan rugs had risen to prominence, with Nepalese artisans playing a central role in meeting the escalating demand. These artisans employed a distinct technique, the Tibetan knot, characterized by a slit-loop method, unlike the Turkish or Persian knots commonly used in most of Asia to create rug pile depth. In this process, rugs are woven by wrapping a continuous yarn length over a rod placed across the stretched warps on the loom. Once the rod is fully wrapped, a knife is skillfully employed to divide the wound yarn into two rows of pile tufts, resulting in a remarkable blend of depth, texture, and opulence. Traditional Tibetan rug motifs are deeply rooted in Buddhist culture and art, reflecting the significant influence of the religion in Tibetan life. Additionally, elements of Chinese origin, such as phoenixes, dragons, lotus symbols, and motifs from Chinese decorative traditions, have been seamlessly incorporated into the rich tapestry of rug designs in this region.
