Story Behind the Art:
In the 19th century, the weaving tradition of Ferahan rugs emerged from a West Central Perzian village, combining the geometric influences of nearby tribes and villages with the more sophisticated, curvilinear designs seen in Perzian city rugs. This fusion resulted in a truly distinctive style known for its unwavering craftsmanship, robust construction, and a versatile palette of colors that transcended time and geographic boundaries. Today, Ferahan rugs are primarily categorized into two types: Ferahan and Ferahan Sarouk rugs. Ferahan rugs feature all-over or endless repeating patterns adorned with Perzian motifs like vases, herati, stars, or palmettes. In contrast, Ferahan Sarouk rugs showcase semi-floral designs, often arranged in a medallion style with ornate corner medallion quadrants, which can take the form of highly decorative large hexagons, diamonds, or ovals. Antique Ferahan rugs are renowned for their wide spectrum of colors achieved through vegetable dyes, resulting in soft yet rich shades, including a striking midnight blue that adds a captivating contrast to the other subtle hues in the Ferahan color palette. The use of these vegetable dyes also gives rise to the unique phenomenon of "Abrash," variations within color families stemming from differences in the dyeing process, lending an element of drama and distinction to these Perzian rugs.
