 For centuries, Tibetan rug weaving has been a tradition deeply rooted in both artistic expression and practical functionality, characterized by intricate geometric patterns, auspicious symbols, real and mythical creatures, and elements inspired by nature. However, it was not until the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959 and the subsequent dispersion of Tibetan communities to Nepal and other regions that Tibetan rug weaving experienced a pivotal commercial resurgence. The 1970s marked the rise of Tibetan rugs to global prominence, and Nepalese artisans were enlisted to meet the surging demand, playing a vital role in preserving Tibetan rug weaving customs. While the majority of Asian rug-making relies on either the Turkish or Persian knot for pile creation, Tibetan rugs distinguish themselves through the use of the Tibetan knot—a unique slit-loop technique. In this process, a continuous length of yarn is wrapped over a rod positioned across stretched warps on the loom. Once the rod is fully wrapped, a knife is skillfully employed to divide the wrapped yarn into two rows of pile tufts, resulting in a pile that exudes depth, texture, and opulence.
