Hand Knotted Beige, Rust Tibetan Wool Transitional Oriental Area Rug - 2' 11'' x 4' 8''
Story Behind the Art: For centuries, Tibetans have employed rugs both for their practical utility and as artistic expressions, incorporating a blend of geometric shapes, auspicious symbols, real and mythical creatures, and elements from nature to craft exquisite and vibrant designs. However, it wasn't until the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959 and the subsequent dispersion of Tibetan communities to Nepal and other regions that Tibetan rug weaving experienced a significant commercial resurgence. By the 1970s, Tibetan rugs gained widespread recognition, with Nepalese artisans playing a central role in meeting the escalating demand. These rugs are characterized by their employment of the Tibetan knot, a slit-loop technique that results in a pile offering a captivating amalgamation of depth, texture, and opulence. In contemporary times, designs found in Tibetan and Nepalese rugs (crafted by Tibetan refugees in Nepal) as well as Indo-Tibetans (manufactured in India) encompass a wide spectrum, ranging from Westernized adaptations of traditional Tibetan motifs like branching floral patterns and snow lions to a diverse assortment of innovative and international free-form designs.
