The rug weaving tradition flourished in Ardabil during the Safavid Dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries. The name 'Ardabil' comes from Avesta (the sacred book of Zoroastrians), which means a 'holy place'. The knot count per square inch for this rug is 180. The pile height is 0.25 inches. This rug is made of 100-percent wool. These Ardabil rugs are tribal hand-woven floor coverings that were made by local weavers in the historic city of Ardabil, located in Northwestern Iran in the 1960's.
