  • Nice design, poor execution

I needed an extra chair for the occasional time when I have more guests than will fit on the sofa. The mid-century design and the color drew me to this chair. I thought it would fit in well with my vintage Heywood Wakefield blonde furniture and my birch floors, and it does. But for the price, I expected better quality. (Photos available.) Design: 5/5 The design has the midcentury vibe I was looking for. The color works well with the paint in the living room and adds a nice "zing" to the room. Comfort: 3/5 The linen-look fabric has a nubby feel to it, but it isn't rough. The padding is on the hard side, though. This isn't a chair you would want to sit in for extended periods. Upholstery workmanship: 4/5 The upholstery was done well, in general. The only thing wrong is where holes were cut to allow the chair to be assembled. The fabric is just stapled to the frame around the holes, with raw fabric edges. Liquid Stitch or something similar should have been applied to ensure the fabric doesn't fray or pull apart. Wood Workmanship: 1/5 My 8th-grade wood shop teacher would have given me a D on this. The wood surfaces should be smooth; they weren't. I went over both arm pieces with #0000 steel wool, with good results, but that's the builder's job, not mine. The builder also did a poor job in finishing the wood before staining. There are rough spots and bumps where it wasn't sanded well, and steel wool isn't going to correct that. The lower rounded edges of the arm and horizontal strut still show file marks, and the stain only emphasizes them. The underside of the arm and the horizontal strut look more like a staining workbench than a finished piece. (And yes, the bottom of the arm is visible when I'm sitting on the sofa. Even if it weren't, this is still poor workmanship.) The inside of the horizontal struts hasn't been planed; it's as rippled and washboarded as the unpaved road into the Bodie ghost town. There is a spot where stain ran down one leg and was left to dry. There are 6 staple holes in the bottom of each horizontal strut, and 4 on the bottom of each arm. One of the struts isn't attached properly to the front upright. The bottoms of the legs aren't finished; the edges haven't been sanded smooth, and there's no stain on the bottom; it's just raw wood with a glide nailed into it. There are small splits in the edges of the bottom of two legs. There are small dents and dings here & there, which you might expect if your folks bought this chair in the 50s and handed it down to you; not in a brand-new chair, though! Returning mail-order furniture is a huge pain, which is why I'm going to keep this chair. However, I think I've learned my lesson about buying furniture online. It may cost more in the store, but you get to see exactly how well-made the piece is before you buy.

The chair itself is beautiful, but not comfortable. When the chair arrived it was easy to build, but one of the side's precut holes didn't match up. I decided not to take the time to take a part the whole chair and wrap it all back up. Then try to put it all back in the box and ship the heavy thing. I ended up making my own whole. I would probably not buy another chair from this company. Pass on the purchase.

  • These chairs look great!

The chairs look great! They were a little harder to put together than my husband expected, but it wasn't painful or anything. You might want to grab some wood glue to secure the screw hole covers.

The color is exactly what was shown and the chairs are sturdy and compliment our decor. When one arrived the left arm was not correctly made but we called and within 48 hrs we received the replacement arm. Not hard to assemble, took about 1/2 each. We did put felt tips on the legs so that our hard wood floors would not be scratched. Great value.

This chair is awesome. Looks perfect with my floral loveseat that I was trying to match. Arrived quickly and is easy to assemble. Only drawback - the seat could be softer.
