Fearless and majestic Grecian Angel, known as gods messenger in mythology, is carrying a dying hero away from harm becoming his savior. This sculpture, titled Gloria Victis was designed by Mercie following Frances defeat in the Franco-Prussian War, exemplified by the mans broken sword and fallen head. The sculpture stands on a black marble base. Mercies original plaster sculpture won a medal at the 1874 Paris Salon. It is signed Mercie. It was cast using the lost wax method.
