As futons go, this is the overall best futon that I have had. It has a pleasing appearance and the new odor dissipated quickly. It is very comfortable. The one drawback it has likely comes from the way it is packed. It comes vacuum packed at 1/4 its normal size for shipment. However, the vacuum packing distorts the shape, as it likely sits in the warehouse for months before being sold. It took about 4 weeks for the futon to achieve a complete rectangle (It was at about 80% after the recommended 48 hour puff up period). It still has a rise in the middle of the futon with a deficiency of fill near the edges. That rise appears to be finally correcting after I manually fluffed it. At 80 pounds, that is not an easy job for most. I would recommend it still because of the overall quality.
i love futons to sleep on as i like a firmer surface. i had one years ago that my cats peed on and i didn't have a pad over it so it was ruined. since then i've been sleeping on air mattresses which aren't too bad but i wanted another futon. i have an antique iron bed that is full size but just enough off in the length that i can't put a standard box springs in it. the air mattresses work ok with a memory foam/feather topper but i really wanted another futon. the futon was 7 inches after i put it on the bed right out of the package. it's puffed up even more since then and i didn't let it sit for 48 hours as i had no place else to sleep. i have the air mattress on the bed, the futon and my topper plus a waterproof pad that i ordered here "the pebbletex waterproof mattress pad). it's very nice if you are looking for one. i've slept on the bed for 2 nights now and the only issue i have is i don't want to get up. i also have to jump up on the bed because it's so high now. i'm sleeping great, the firmness and "poof" are perfect. this is a heavy and well made futon! i bought one of this quality back in the 80s and paid almost 400 bucks for it. you won't be disappointed with this futon. i'm very impressed with the quality and i'm a happy sleeper! there is a smell to it but i think people forget that there are laws that say there has to be fire retardant on mattresses and if you want one that doesn't have that plan on spending 2000 dollars minimum. plus i'm sure they put stuff on them to keep the bugs from eating them in the warehouse. it didn't bother me that much and then i encased it all in the waterproof mattress pad anyway. i have allergies too. so if you have an issue with the smell, i'd put a waterproof cover over it. i love my new futon!
