These are WONDERFUL! I have flatware for 12 in my tray and it's all housed neatly and safely. The only thing I should mention is that if your drawers have some sort of a ridge on the sides, the two slides don't want to stay open as the ridge will allow them to close over again to fit the bottom dimension of the drawer perfectly. We solved that problem by simply putting a layer of cork down on the bottom of the drawer to bring the level up and eliminate the drawer's ridge. Voila - problem solved and they are fantastic! Not only do they hold so much more than the cheap little plastic flatware organizers, but they elevate the look a thousand times. The small compartment is perfect for holding the cutlery for my grandchildren and they think they are special that they have their own area.
The tray was exactly as shown, and I really do like the expansion feature--great idea. However, the fact is it's hard, polished wood, and the silverware makes a LOT of noise rattling around in the tray when you open and close the drawer or take items in or out of it. Also, the front/smallest section is quite small; I have to turn the teaspoons diagonally to fit them in it, meaning I can only fit part of them in the slot. The other slots are quite narrow so you have to stack the flatware meticulously or it won't all fit in. Frankly my family isn't that meticulous when they are hurriedly unloading the dishwasher, say, and have to stop and make sure everything is lined up just so in order to get it to all fit--just not going to happen. I'm going to stick with my plastic flatware tray because it's quieter and actually holds more. For someone with only a small amount of silverware this would work great, although i think i would line the bottom with felt or something; it's not just noisy but i think after a while it might show a lot of wear from silverware constantly hitting or scraping it on the way in or out.
I needed something to put knives in to keep them together safely. It is perfect. I fit steak knives, paring knives and more into this unit and it expanded to fit the space that I had for the unit with no problem.
