This item is very handy because it switches from English to metric quickly and easily but I often go back to my old mechanical device to get a second opinion. The problem is that it is often too accurate making it difficult to preset it at a fixed size like 1/4". This is a problem because no bolt or socket is exactly 1/4" so I tend to set the device at 1/4 and then slide the bolt through it to see if it is loose or snug. This is important when the bolt is not screwing into the socket properly and your trying to determine if the size is wrong or does it have the wrong thread. Or, if all is correct and the threading is a little bit bad on the bolt shank or in the socket. In this case often a little bit more force needs to be applied while in the other you will destroy the bolt and/or the socket threads leaving you dead in the water. My advice is to buy this one if you need the conversion function, which you will eventually. But, don't get rid of your mechanical caliper.
