This is a GREAT value for a new dining set made out of bamboo. I love it... it's beautiful, polished, and generally well-built (with a few caveats, see below). I live in a small 1-bedroom apartment and this is the perfect size dining table for up to 4 people. The chairs are indeed a bit small, but I'm 200 lbs and they still seat my butt fine. What's nice about the smaller chairs is that you can fit them either one on each table side or two to a side lengthwise. The set was packaged and protected phenomenally well, though it's a pity so much styrofoam and wrapping foam was used for this supposedly eco-friendly product (wish they stuck with cardboard or other alternative packing materials). The instructions were actually quite clear and it took me 2 hours to assemble the set by myself (it doesn't actually need 2 people, despite what the instructions say). However, installation is made a lot easier with either a electric screwdriver or a ratcheting manual one that you can pick up at the hardware store for a few dollars. The tiny Allen wrench included in the box works, but it's slow, tedious, and painful to use. The pre-drilled, pre-angled screw holes made assembly a lot easier and everything just fit together the way it was supposed to... amazingly enough for a low-cost DIY set like this. In terms of build quality, the set is generally well-built, but the legs are relatively thin and you should be careful about exerting diagonal or other unintended forces on them. The day after installation, I tried to move the table to another room and one of the table legs caught on my low-pile carpet and ripped out of its metal anchor. The table still stood, but the leg would dangle whenever I raised the table off the ground. Fortunately, the customer service at Overstock was extremely nice and helpful and sent me a free replacement in a matter of days. Slipped it right in, parts and all, and it's been fine ever since. As a bonus, I got to keep the other leg and fixed it up with just a little wood glue and now it's acting as a spare (or makeshift bamboo club). The wood also had a few minor splits/splinters at certain parts, but not on any of the surfaces that people would normally touch. The tabletop has a mostly-smooth, perfectly usable surface that could probably be sanded down a little bit more or re-finished if you really want to, but I like it just the way it is. Overall, I'm really pleased with this set, especially its natural material and aesthetics. Many friends have commented on it, and I look forward to years of use out of it. I would've been glad to pay a little more for a little better build quality (especially the legs), but it's hard to find anything else like this in this price range, so I'm quite happy nonetheless. 4/5 for overall satisfaction and value, -1 star for build quality.
This dining set fit perfectly in my galley style kitchen. It has a contemporary, yet homey look and feel. The quality is good, especially for the price, and it was easy to assemble. The black finish has an enamel-like (shiny) quality to it and complements beautifully with my stainless steel and black appliances.
We have a new stainless steel accented kitchen. This slightly contemporary dining set with the steel band is perfect. The finish does not pretend to really look like wood. It in not. This works well in our contemporary setting. I gave it only 4 stars because of the plastic like finish
