Easy to put together by snapping and sliding pieces together. No tools needed. Took me about 10 minutes from the time it arrived at the door to having shoes on it. Looks great and has cleared up floor space. If you are looking for a shoe rack, give this on the once over!
It took almost as much time to unpack everything and clean up the packaging mess as it did to assemble the unit! I was impressed with the fact that everything lined up perfectly--the screw holes, the notches, etc. All hardware was packaged in individual plastic wrapped envelopes and labeled. Take your time, lay everything out in neat order and follow the directions. A word of caution: some parts are specific to fit--use extra time and care in figuring out WHICH way every piece is meant to fit... (the front to towards the front, the center divider facing the specific way).
The unit looks nice in place. It is made of quality materials and is well-constructed. It is also a reasonable price for a closet unit. Extra hardware was provided. However, it is not easy to assemble and install securely. Because the tower unit is 24" wide, you are only going to have one side of it mounted securely to a stud; the other side will be mounted into the drywall with anchors. This is going to hold a lot of weight so must be done properly. Read the instructions thoroughly before starting and review all your options of layout before you begin installation. Some of the instructions suggest means that are not the most efficient - use what works for you. We took our time designing and installing this and are very happy with the results. However, I could see where it would be easy to follow the instructions blindly then find you should have done it another way.
I purchased this rack to place in my closet to create more space for shoes. As a man with a size 11 shoe? The rack fits my dress shoes fine, but not my sneakers. The height between shelves needs to be another 2 inches. Outside of that good quality shelving unit for the price.
Remodeling older Florida home. Lucky enough to have new drywall and studs, but I can now see how I would install this on older walls in other closets.
I took the time and drew out my designs on the provided graphing tools. It made all the difference as we did a walk in close, not a straight run. We bought two towers and two closet systems. With only one tower wall left upon completion, we creatively used every linear foot of shelf and had plenty of rod space. If I had to guess, we tripled the capacity of the close with this system.
It took my husband and I about three days to mount and hang everything. Not 3 8 hour days, more like 3 5 hours days. The best thing we did was to have a plan. Once we put in the first tower (shelf unit) we had a system down. A $ stud finder was a big help, too.
While you can do this with basic tools, if you plan on going rouge from the supplied designs, rent or borrow a chop saw. That made very fast work of the shelving cuts. Bars we a little tough to cut with a hack saw, but easy. We took advantage of all the extra hardware to reinforce everything. And, Overstock and another big box retailer sell extra hardware, accessories and shelving a la carte. YOU MUST GEt ThE VALET BAR! TOO COOL. One of those things that makes you say, "Why didn't I have one of these for years?"
I can say with 100% certainly that we LOVE the results. We paid attention to detail and design and our closet could easily be worth 3-4 times what we spent in resale value. We WILL be adding an additional system to our guest bedroom closet once we move.
Lastly, if you are not comfortable with anything above basic tools i.e. using a level, anchors etc etc, get some help or hire a handyman. We learned a lot but had the time and resources to do so. Good luck and enjoy your new closet! :-)
We had never heard of John Louis until I researched and read reviews. We were in the market for a good closet system and what we got was a great closet system. It truly was worth every penny and more. My husband was so impressed that he ordered 2 more for our other closest. The more he works with the pieces as he installs them, the more impressed he gets, as do I. It is truly the best closet system ever.
The Long and Short of it...First - I'm a Girl! (A Girl with average strength and DIY skills, but a Girl just the same) I wanted to upgrade the closets in my 1950's house in Ft Lauderdale and after checking into some of the closet contractor pricing, felt that I could get similar results at a third of the price if I did the job myself. I bought two Deluxe Red Mahogany kits, one for a 10ft wide reach in closet and one for my smaller 6 x 4 walk-in. I saw them at one of the Hardware Superstores and the same kit was $$ more so I saved $$$ at Overstock and enjoyed shipping!
The kits arrived in large cartons well packed and protected and unlike many of these systems where midway through the project, you find they have forgotten to include something that invariably takes weeks to arrive, the inventory matched the packing list. I started on the 10ft closet first and though it did take me two days, the resulting build in is spectacular and even my handyman was impressed with the quality of the kit not to mention that I was able to do it myself. : )
The most important part of the install is the measuring (oh, and beer!). Measure and mark and measure again. Particularly with the tower brackets, of you get this sideways, the shelves won't fit. Get your level out and spot check your widths (do this before you drink too many beers! lol). Though I tried to drill into studs where possible, I did have to purchase a box of different wall anchors ($) as the ones included in the kit were unsuitable for the type of plaster in this older 50's house. In this install, I had a leftover piece of shelving that I cut down into an additional tower shelf and by drilling in four pin holes, was able to gain an extra storage space (it comes with additional shelf pins which was nice). If you don't have any extra shelving, you might want to buy the tower shelf kit in addition, as the base kit only supplies two shelves for a six foot tower.
My boyfriend very kindly helped me install the 6x4 walk in system and it went much more quickly even though the configuration was different. The additional storage space is great and so much more efficient than the old home built shelves that were there when I bought the house. All in all, these two improvements look fantastic and I saved a LOT of money by investing my time, not to mention, improved my DIY skills and built my confidence in my abilities. Love this product - just get your tools out and get started and before you know it, you will be enjoying a custom fitted closet!
I bought one of these for my husband's John Louis closet. He loved it. I saw him using it and saw how handy it was so ordered one for my closet (not a John Louis). It comes with regular screws to put it in any closet. I use it all the time. Great for hanging up clothes you are going to wear the next day. Hanging clothes while you are changing before you put them back where they belong. My daughter saw it and I had to install the 12" version in her Martha Stewart closet. Works great.
This armoire is a nicely constructed piece for the money. The dark finish looks classy and the drawers and door open well. It was fairly easy to assemble. My husband and I completed it in about 2 hours. We did use a power drill. It holds a lot of clothing. We are happy with it.
The John Louis closet system is very well made and the wood is beautiful. It does take a bit of time to install especially if you have to cut pieces to size (i.e., closet system is sold to fit a 10 foot length wall but you may not have that length), but the instructions are pretty thorough. Try to find studs if you can because the closet system is fairly heavy. Dealing with customer service for the manufacturer can't be more easier or satisfactory. If you mess up or just need some extra parts, they ship it out to you right away without question. Overall, well worth the money and effort. Overstock is cheaper than other websites or Home Depot and Lowes.
I wear knee-high boots from October through April, and over the years I've amassed quite a collection. I've tried all different kinds of storage methods -- everything from boxes to drawers to expandable inserts that let me hang them from a shower curtain-sized tension rod -- but THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST! It's clean and simple, fits neatly under my shorter hanging clothes, keeps the leather shaft of the boots straight without any bulky inserts, and, because one of the boots is upside down, it takes up HALF the floor space! Fantastic!
It'll take you a nice afternoon to assemble and install it the way you want, but the time spent is well worth it. The system looks great on the wall and functions quite nicely. My only advice is to NOT over tighten the cheap fasteners that come with it. They break very easily. I'm handy enough to have been able to use wood screws and glue in the spots I broke the supplied fasteners. Have on hand your stud finder, a short and long level and a long phillips head screw driver or long extension for your drill to help drive in the screws in tight places. I bought 2 of these units and used them to cover about 19' of closet wall space. The color in the picture is accurate and despite what the other reviews have said- the 12" shelf unit easily accommodates standard hangers and shoe widths/lengths.
We purchased honey maple doors for John Louis custom closet furniture. The packaging protected the parts very well; everything arrived in excellent condition. The engineering on the doors was generally good, but there are some issues. I would have preferred to have had the holes pre-drilled as there was some room for error in installing the hinges onto the doors. When attaching the doors to the tower frame, although there is only one position where the doors will fit, again, there is some room for error that could have been eliminated with pre-drilled, or even pre-marked drill-holes. Finally, the adjustments on the hinges are very difficult to use. All told, while we found all the other parts from John Louis (towers, shelves, drawers, etc. to be very well engineered and easy to assemble, the doors were significantly more challenging.
We bought this as a closet alternative - and while it took quite a while to assemble (two adults, a drill, two hammers and two screwdrivers) it was well worth it. It holds a substantial amount of my clothes and there's even the ability to add some baskets on top of the dresser for more storage. (If you have high ceilings)
I think one tip that would have been extremely helpful is that if the main doors don't line up when you first put them on - in the very back of the instruction manual there is a key on how to fix that without actually removing the doors. This would have saved us probably an hour if we had known!
Aside from taking hours (about 18) to install 3 systems, this John Louis system failed in two areas. The pull out drawers should have been recessed within the frame vs how it is now - sitting on top of the outer frame when closed. Every time I close a drawer, it catches on the clothes hanging to the left and right. That is a major aggravation. The quality is four stars since many pieces arrived with slight damage to the veneer (dents and chips). It was installed by the contractor when I wasn't here or else I would have sent those pieces back for replacement so just check every part of the system for flaws. It's likely you will find some. All that said, the system looks great and was well worth the money.
This is one of the best all-purpose shelves I've come across so far. First I'll start with the pros: Easy to put together, material is strong enough to hold shoes, bags and clothes, can custom stack shelves (I bought several so that the bottom shelves are smaller to fit flat shoes and that the top shelves are larger in height to fit heels and bags). Can also be used to store clothing and is very durable and steady once items are placed on the shelves. Cons: If you only buy one package, you are limited to a very short height for storing shoes so only flats and sneakers will fit, you can not fit heels or larger items on the shelves based on the figuration on the height.
Great purchase for the price and you can't beat free shipping. I received the product in about a week and it looks great in my 4-year-old daughter's bedroom. It is very sturdy and she uses it as a wardrobe to hang her clothes. My husband took about an 1 1/2 to assemble it, although he stated the instructions lacked details. It is important to insert the blue dowels as they make the unit a little more sturdy. Sturdy enough, not to attach to the wall. It is a heavy piece of furniture as well. I would definitely recommend it to other people.
This is actually the exact same shoe rack that we all put our shoes on in the yoga studio where I did my teacher training though I didn't notice that when I ordered it (it was a subliminal attraction). So when I saw the box I knew right away that I would love it and that it would hold a ton of shoes, which it does--all of my husband's shoes and all of mine fit on this in my closet, just not our winter boots. It's beautiful and sturdy, and I heartily recommend it.
bought for 16yr old boy. Works fine for him. Not a whole lot of space but he also has three draws with day bed so the added two and closet space worked out fine. Took a bit to put together but we managed. Not good for a teen girl with lots of clothes. Good price.
This system is a great choice for organization of that messy closet space. The product is made of real wood and the drawer slides are well made. I have a tool chest with the same slides and I have never had an issue with them. There is a drawback. The hardware (meaning screws, and locking cams) are substandard. The screws have soft heads which do not handle pressure well. The locking cams are made of cheap metal. Grab another one? The manufacturer gives you an exact number of screws and cams. There are no extras in the hardware bags. A quick trip to me local hardware store and I was able to finish the project. One would think that they would use top quality attachment hardware but not so. Specially for the price. The overall appearance and functionality are great.
It doesn't hold as much as I thought it would, and it does sag a little. I don't intend to use it for anything but sheets and towels, and I'm not worried about it breaking or anything. I've had it for a month or so, and I'm not in love with it, but I'm pleased. I might get another one.
I purchased this for my wife. The appearance is nice. It is well built and works great. After some time using this product it has held up to our usage very well. The finish has stayed nice. Over all we are very satisfied.
I've had aluminum and plastic show racks before and frankly, they just don't hold up. This one is much sturdier. Love the dependability so that I could fit two into the bottom of my closet at right angles. Frankly I was surprised how many pairs I could fit on these. Would order again.
Very Pleased with my shoe rack! It holds my flats, High Heels, booties, and my tennis shoes, high top tennis shoes, and I
It fits perfect in my room and I love the color and I plan on ordering another one!
Finally! A great system for organizing my closet! I have tried everything short of calling one of these companies that charges thousands of dollars to design a closet system. Note that the difference between the regular and deluxe is that one is 12 inches deep and the other is 16 inches deep. I emptied my closet and called on a handyman to install this stuff, because I didn't want to screw it up. He said it was easy to work with, and he will recommend it to clients. I have a 12" on the right, and a 16" on the left, and LOVE it to pieces.
One of my favorite purchases to date. I made the purchase mostly because of the safeguard against things falling off the top. The cabinet section is surprisingly roomy and the drawers have good space as well. For the price the drawer rollers and cabinet hinges could be slightly higher quality but they work well. I wouldn’t recommend it to a first timer since there are an overwhelming amount of pieces to put it together.
I really appreciate this hamper. I've had others that have broken under pressure. I was looking for a sturdy laundry organizer without wheels and I found it in this product. Not to mention, it's very stylish looking. Great buy!
I cannot always envision how things will look, especially with size. After measuring the area, I decided on this cute little chest to use in a really tiny house to place for storage and to hold TV. It arrived without a ding or a dang and it is absolutely perfect. It is sturdy and appears to be made of a good quality woods and designs. It was fully assembled with the knobs attached! It is heavy- very, so an old lady like I would have to have some help getting the house. But it is a simple two person job. I cannot say enough great things about this item. I will probably be purchasing the small table soon.
I ordered for my husband's ties for our closet and it was perfect. It came very fast and it came with all the needed items to mount in our closet. It works great as a tie rack, there is plenty of room to hang on each hook. I would imagine belts would work great as well. I am happy with my purchase.
Super stylish, sturdy, durable, high quality...surprising considering the low cost! Piece of cake to assemble. Didn't require power tools. Instructions suggested 2 ppl but I was able to put together myself and I am only 5' 00" 105 lbs. One of my favorite purchases I have ever made. Love it!

Types of Closet Organization
Perfect for bedroom closets and hall closets alike, a versatile storage system can help you quickly put any closet in order. Complete systems vary greatly in size and functionality. For smaller closets, some organizers are designed with only a handful of shelves and a single hanging bar. Storage systems built for expansive walk-ins are built like wardrobes and may feature multiple rows of shelving, spacious cabinets, and several bars for hanging coats, shirts, dresses, and suits. Many storage systems are constructed to fit snugly between the walls of a closet, providing organizational space without taking up too much extra room, while others feature simple structures you can easily rest against a wall. Whatever the size of your closet, you can find a storage system on Overstock that will fit perfectly.
Shelves are an invaluable addition to any closet. Whether they are built into a storage unit or into a wall, each shelf offers a neat and tidy space where you can keep boxes, baskets, and folded clothing. For versatility, some storage units are built with adjustable shelves, so you can move each shelf around to open up extra space whenever necessary. Some shelving includes baskets made from wicker or plastic to provide color contrast and promote more efficient organization.
Low-profile hanging hooks conveniently store and organize smaller closet items like belts, ties, scarves, and handbags. They can be built into the doors of spacious closet organizers, sold as individual hooks, or mounted to hanging brackets. Some hook racks are designed to hang over a closet door, while others are meant to be screwed into a wall. The number of hooks can vary greatly, but however many hooks you might need, you can find a bracket or set that will perfectly accommodate every item you need to hang.
Simple and straightforward, a horizontal rod or pole designed to accommodate hangers is an easy way to put your closet in order. Many closets are built with rods already installed, but if your wardrobe requires additional hanging space, then a second or third rod might be just what you need. They are made from many different materials, including metals, plastics, and woods, and they can also be handsomely finished for a little decorative flair.
An orderly shoe rack is a necessity in most entryway closets and a vital convenience for any fashionista’s wardrobe. Many designs are available, ranging from simple cubbies with multiple compartments to grandiose pieces that put shoes on display. Some racks are expandable, allowing your collection of boots, sandals, stilettos, and flats to grow or shrink without requiring another rack. Shoe trees, stylish innovations on the standard shoe rack design, are another option. They feature round, upright bodies that organize shoes in a stylish display while taking up very little space.
No closet would be complete without a durable set of drawers for socks, underwear, jeans, t-shirts, shorts, and sweaters. Drawers conveniently store and organize clothes out of sight, making them a popular feature in many closet organizers and wardrobes. You can also purchase streamlined cabinets and trunks that solely feature drawers. To ensure longevity, find a durable wooden set that is built with sturdy dovetail joinery and reliable metal pulls.
Dirty laundry is one of the most notorious enemies of a clean and organized bedroom. Clothing left on the floor is easily forgotten and can quickly clutter up a bedroom, which is why a convenient laundry cart, hamper, or basket in the closet is one of the best ways to keep your room orderly. Some laundry carts use fabric hampers that are mounted to metal frames with locking casters so they can easily be rolled into the laundry room, while other laundry organizers are equipped with ergonomic handles that make them easy to carry around the house. Some laundry organizers are constructed from large cubbies that can be used with baskets, allowing you to easily sort dirty laundry by color or wash cycle.
Closet Organizers and Systems FAQs
Which storage options do I need for the closet near my front door?
Shoe racks are an indispensable storage option for any closet, especially closets in entryways. Without shoe racks, entryway closets quickly get cluttered and shoes become buried under each other. Additionally, while almost every closet features a built-in hanging rod, a hook bracket hung over the closet door can provide a little extra storage space for coats and sweaters near your front door.
Friends order the same shelves after viewing my closet!
