The bowls are larger than I thought they would be. They hold 2 cups. Bowls have an edge on the top outside that is not smooth like the rest of the bowl. They are pretty.
Loved the set when I bought them in 2008 (bought service for 12)... but always wanted a true bowl. The set has a dish/bowl piece... with a big rim and maybe only an inch in depth (Have you ever tried to carry soup in that?). These bowls are perfect... High enough to control spills, hold popcorn, or cereal with plenty of milk. (And for those who say that the bowls are too big... the answer is simple... Don't fill them to the top!) Based on what I read in reviews, I expected HUGE bowls... They are in reality... ample... but it is not like they are the size of mixing bowls,,, If yo have the set of dishes... you need the bowls.
These are really great, colorful bowls. They're just a tad too large for salad or ice cream, but of course I don't have to fill them to the top. The colors are vivid. The bowls feel sturdy--have survived a few times in the dishwasher. For the price they are a deal! Because of the mulitple colors they can "match" many different kinds of stoneware or china (I've paired them with a green set that was missing salad bowls, rather than spend the money to complete the original set).
It may be because they are on the bottom of the dishwasher (no room up top due to plastic kids bowls and cups), but I found cracks in two bowls. So far the rest are good, but I'm expecting it to happen again since we are stuck keeping them on the bottom for now.
