Since we have a dining room adjacent to our kitchen, we decided to do away with our existing 5 pce table and chair set and replace it with this island and 2 bar stools. The island was delivered in 3 large boxes, with each stool in its own box, for a totoal of 5 boxes. The components were impressively well-packaged, with a dumpster load of styrofoam and cardboard, but even so, a few parts managed to get damaged. I contacted Overstock via email to report the damage, to which I received a prompt reply and a promise to have replacement parts shipped. I'm very pleased with the level of service I received from Overstock and their handling of this matter. As for the island, assembly isn't terribly difficult, but it's also not what I'd consider easy. There are a lot of pieces and parts to keep track of. Fortunately, each part is labeled and corresponds to illustrations in the included instruction pages. Since I wanted my assembly to be permanent and without the need to ever have to tighten bolts, I assembled the island with a good quality wood glue and applied Permatex red to the threads of each bolt. I've assembled lots of RTA furniture and compared to other RTA furniture, the quality of this island is very good, made mosly of solid wood with all screw holes lining up perfectly. A review I'd read commented on the quality of the hardware, so I expected that I may need to visit my local big box store to buy replacement hardware before I could start the process of assembling the island and stools, but the included hardware was decent, and included extras, so I used it. I was able to tighten down on the hex bolts, being careful to to split the wood, without stripping, rounding or mashing the bolts using the included hex tool. The drawer glides are basic cabinet draw glides, which function well. The bottom of each drawer is thin (about 1/8-inch), but is adequate for storing a couple of cookbooks or a handful of cooking utensils. The lower cabinets are separated by a center partition. Each cabinet contains 2 adjustable shelves, for a total of 4 shelves. The oak veneer top seems durable and shows a lot of oak grain, but the stain on the edges is thin, which I could see would quickly become an unsightly issue, especially when the chairs swivel into it and cause the finish to flake off, so I applied several coats of a satin finish rub-on polyeurethane to the oak top and edges in the hopes of adding a level of durability to the finish. The stools come partially assembled, with the back attached to the seat. The base needs to be constructed, which can be a challenge for one person, but I loosley assembled the parts and tightened the bolts when everything was in its place. The stools are sturdy and a good height for the table, but one of the 2 stools I received was damaged and does not swivel well, even after lubricating the ball bearings, so Overstock has promised to replace the stool. Overall, I'm satisfied with this island. We did a significant amount of research prior to purchasig this island and stools and believe this presents a very good value and will provide the additional storage our small kitchen needs, as compared to a comparably sized custom island costing several times the price of this one. Our plan is to use this island with the existing oak top and to eventually, after it gets banged up a bit, replace the top with a slab of granite that matches our countertops.

  • KITCHEN ISLAND

10/31/14 I just bought this island and was looking forward to delivery, that was until I came home and found a bunch of busted up damaged boxes sitting in my driveway, I am disabled veteran and required help moving them, one box weighed around 130 lbs or so, when we went to move the box the cardboard packaging just fell apart, I was shocked that UPS would even try to deliver something in that condition the two of the other boxes were also damaged, I contacted overstock and they said wait up to 10 days for a damage inspection from UPS so my day was getting worse by the minute, I told them no way they needed to get this junk out of here I had no place to store it and no way secure it , they said they would follow up with me, and they have, they are making a positive customer service effort. just return the damaged items and we are reshipping a replacement. my problem now is to some how get these monster heavy boxs packed and taped up securely for the trip back to overstock. I hope this thing is worth the effort it will take to assemble. for all of the stress they gave me if overstock wanted to do the right thing they would white glove deliver an assembled unit and call it a day : To be continued

  • Nice Addition to Kitchen
    Verified Purchase

I recently remodeled my kitchen and opted for this island over a table for the eat-in area. The overall quality was better than expected (wood is very heavy and sturdy). It was NOT easy to assemble; I am handy and it took me and my very handy boyfriend several hours. Some of the holes did not line up easily so getting those to work right took finesse (and a few choice words). The only "major" problem I had was with the drawers. I'm pretty sure the box that contained these pieces must have been dropped or otherwise not handled with care because there were a few cracks in parts of the wood. This made the drawers not square when assembled and they did not set on the tracks properly. From the front of the island you can notice that the drawers are off balance and not aligned as they should be. They also don't slide with ease but they do function. The esthetics of this island were very important for me as my entire kitchen was just brand new. Luckily Amazon refunded a portion of my purchase price so that I could invest in repairing the drawers. Overall I am very happy with the outcome and the island finishes off my kitchen perfectly!

  • Frustrated

This will be my first review...ever. When the boxes arrived, I was so excited to finally have my island and in time for Thanksgiving. The first chair was put together by my fiancé before I got home. But when I sat on the stool, the arm of the chair cracked away from the back. We continued to put together the other chair without problems... Not the story with the island base. When we put together the core of the island, it just wasn't lining up with the holes in the base. The holes were drilled in the incorrect spot, so we drilled holes ourselves. There were screws missing to connect the base and to connect the breakfast bar to the island top. I am very unhappy with the process and length of time that this all took. Then I find out that my 7 year old nephew sat at the other chair on Thanksgiving and the arm broke on that one also! If I didn't love the way it looked in my kitchen and it's perfect size, I would have returned the entire thing! Hopefully anyone else buying this product will not have the same problems
