    • Nice shades - beware of the sizes!
      Verified Purchase
Option: 36 inch width x 60 inch height

Nice shades, as advertised, no complaints. EXCEPT for the size. The description doesn't warn you that they don't take off the usual 1/8th inch from your measurements like most other blinds/shades retailers. Thankfully, my windows are old and not a true 36 inches and I was able to take the end caps off of the blinds to get them to fit.

    • Wrong size, terrible installation
      Verified Purchase
Option: 34.5 inch width x 60 inch height

These are EXACTLY the same width they say they are. Unfortunately, in order to mount them, you need an extra 1/4 in on each side for the mounting brackets that come with them. It would have been nice if they had incorporated that into their measurements (or if they would chance their mounting hardware so the edges can still block out the light). If you want them to fit, you need to order 1/2" smaller than your window. Installation of these blinds was miserable. There were NO instructions! They didn't fit in the window. It wasn't even clear how they were supposed to fit in the window! There weren't enough screws and were too many weird plastic parts. My husband and I both have graduate degrees in mechanical engineering and product design from a top university and we spent hours trying to figure this out to no avail... I had to return them, which is too bad, because they are nice quality other than the size/mounting.

    • Nice solution for transom window above the door.
      Verified Purchase
Option: 36 inch width x 48 inch height

The top part of the blind is made of pure white plastic. The fabric shade part that comes down is soft gray in color ... I think it's because of the metallic black-out material inside. This white and gray color scheme works GREAT with my apartment. It's very sturdy, with clean smooth lines, and it doesn't look cheap at all. We have a door to the outside in the bedroom, and it has a rectangular window on top of the door (transom window), which lets in lots of light. Too much light for sleeping in past 5:30 a.m. in the summer! Because it was above a door, we didn't want to put in curtains, as they would get in the way of the door. We could have gone with a roller shade, but we decided to try this honeycomb cell blackout cordless cellular shade. The shade was easy to install, but you have to look at the diagram very carefully that comes with it. For installing flat against the wood frame above the window, install the bracket so it looks like an upside down L. The squiggly part of the bracket goes on the bottom (against the wall), and the smooth corner part of the bracket goes on top (that's the part of the L that is hanging out in space). You will need a drill (I used a hand drill) for drilling 4 holes into the wood frame. Then you will need a screw driver for screwing the 4 long screws into the wood frame. Also you will need a level and a yard stick or ruler or something like that for making your 4 holes all in line with each other and level, and for measuring where you want the brackets to go. They recommend placing the brackets 4 inches in from the edges of the shade. After you have the brackets installed, then you open the fabric of the shade up a little bit, center it on your 2 brackets, and then tuck the bottom of the top plastic part into the squiggly lower bracket piece. After you've tucked the top plastic part into both of the squiggly lower bracket pieces, then you snap the top of the top plastic part into the clips. Voila! Installed! Hurray! Now, how about the operation and functionality of this blind? Well, first of all, the shade slides up and down very easily. I just have to get up on a footstool to reach it (because it is installed above the transom window), then pull it down as far as I want it to go. Of course, I also have to move the footstool back to push the blind back up, but that's no problem. The few problems I have ... the little side clips that go into the bottom plastic part .... they don't stay in without tape. Right now I have them secured with some clear scotch tape. Hope that will hold it. The second thing is that the whole bottom piece, the part that you pull down and push up .. is able to slide about 5 inches off the end one way, and 5 inches off the end the other way. I don't see any way to tape it or hold it back in. So ... if the bottom slides out, of course it makes the blind look terrible. But the good thing is, all you have to do is slide it back. It's kind of annoying. I'm thinking about contacting customer service at overstock, because maybe something is wrong with the blind I have? Other than that, the blind works great. In my case, the transom window is about 35 inches, and the blind is 36 inches, so there's not quite enough overlap to block out all the light. There is still light that comes in through the sides. But it's OK, at least there isn't DIRECT light coming in on us while we're sleeping. The blackout of the shades themselves is not 100%, I'd say it's something like 90%. If you were to cover very possible light opening with these blinds (with no light bleed on the sides), I think you would not reach total 100% darkness. However, it would be quite dark. This blind is good (4 stars), and it's making a BIG difference for us.

These blinds are perfect! They are low profile and non intrusive when drawn up and provide complete privacy when down. Installation is a one person job-I didn't have any problem installing them by myself. Just be sure to order a half inch to an inch smaller than the width of your window if you're planning an inside mount as they are not trim-able. I followed another reviewer's recommendation of pulling the blind down slightly farther than where you want it to end up as they do tend to shrink back up an inch or two the first few times you use them. I would definitely purchase these again.

    • Really does darken the room
      Verified Purchase

I ordered two of these for a toddler's bedroom plus another for a guest bedroom.I have used actual "blackout" curtains in the past and although these are definitely not "blackout" by definition, they significantly darken the room and are much better than a previous set of non-blackout cellular shades I had purchased. The color is really not a bright white. Instead it is at the cool end of the white spectrum and appears almost silver or gray. I did not find this to be a problem because I am not using bright white in the drapery panels flanking these windows and the walls are a cool shade of a pale sage greenish-gray color so they go very nicely. The plastic handle that comes with these cheapens the overall look, but it is of course optional to install since you can raise or lower them just by gently pushing or pulling on the base. These were extremely easy to install and the price was great! I am ordering another one for a bathroom.

    • Nice shades
      Verified Purchase

I gave these shades 4 out of 5 stars because they are not white, but a light gray. The light gray is because they are lined with black (inside the cell) to block out the light and have a white exterior, but the overall effect is very light gray. My rooms are a cool shade white so they are fine, but if they were a warm shade of white or a warm shade of color, I don't think I would like them. The look and feel is nice, a soft fabric feeling. Also, the info on the sizes being true (versus cut down 1/4 inch) to the dimension quoted that I read in other reviews before ordering was correct, so I ordered ½ inch smaller based on where they would be mounted and was fine. They go up and down beautifully. I can see how some people may have been confused by the instructions, but if you have installed blinds before, I think you will be fine. The instructions are on par with blinds that I have bought at the local big hardware stores. I think they do a great job blocking light and I can sleep without a mask at any time during the day and feel that it is night. Overall, I would buy again and refer to anyone in need of blackout shades.

I'll try and make this quick...I purchased my fathers house while he moved up north. In the office...the sun came in so bright that he actually had aluminium foil on the window and then a cheap blind in front of it to keep the sun out. I wanted to be able to use the window when the sun was not blazing though....and this blind turned out to be absolutely perfect. I have some so called "Black out" curtains in my bedroom that do NOT blackout the sun. This blind does. I really like this blind. You simply use your hand to lightly lift up on the blind to raise it...and lower it. Doesn't take much pressure...doesn't make much of a sound. Super super easy to install. No taxes...shipping was quick...and right to my door. Perfect. Couldn't hardly ask for more.

    • Definitely need better instructions but nice!
      Verified Purchase

To help any future buyers out in hanging these shades, here you go. The instructions are pretty non exsistant but with a little trial and error, it can be figured out. If hanging outside the window frame like I did, the brackets need to have the longest lip attaching to your blind and the other against the wall which will snap your blind in once installed. Try the brackets on your blind before attaching them to the wall to be sure you have them in the correct position. They will snap securely if they are correct. There is a front and back side to the blinds as well. The flat side goes against the wall and the slightly curved faces out. I positioned my brackets above the window molding and about 2 inches in from where the ends of the shades would be. Be aware if you're planning to put a bracket at the center, there is a plastic piece in the center on the blinds that will get in the way of attaching at that point. This is what happened to me. So you may have to off center your center bracket depending on the length of your shades. I ordered the white shades and they are definitely light grey. The plastic frame of them is white but when pulled down, they are grey. The big plastic pieces that come in the box are for pulls that snap on the end of your shades if you want them. I personally didn't care for them. The tiny plastic pieces are to be attached at the bottom of your window frame at the outside edges of the shades if you don't want the shades flapping around if the window is open and they are down. They will attach to the bottom of the blind and keep it in place. Once you know which way to hang the metal brackets, everything else is pretty easy. To attach the blinds, tip them back toward the wall and catch the lip of the metal bracket on the edge of the frame then lower and snap into place. Hope that helps and makes sense! They definitely do the trick of darkening the room and they look like they are well made. I've only had them up for 2 days so fingers crossed once the baby comes they will do the trick!

I love this shade! I installed it by myself in my baby's nursery using just a cordless drill/screwdriver. It goes up and down really easily and stays where it is put. It is a true blackout shade and his room is completely dark now. I also love that it is cordless and therefore safe for baby. I loved this shade so much that I ordered more shades for all the other bedrooms in the house. Other reviewers have mentioned leaving 1/4 inch on each side for brackets. Perhaps those were a different model, because the model that shipped to me had the brackets on the top and back, about 4 inches from the sides. So a true measurement would have fit. That said, when in doubt, definitely round down.

Option: 40 inch width x 72 inch height

We bought these blinds for our bedroom, which faces west. The size is exactly as advertised. The fabric of the blinds themselves is very similar to higher-priced brands, and the metallic lining does an excellent job of blocking the light. I took a star off because they were a little difficult to install (there is a "right side" to face out although the directions don't say so. The flat side needs to face the back of the clips.) The clips to install the blinds are also slightly less substantial than more expensive brands, and the metal clip part is harder to disengage if you need to move them (or if you put them up wrong initially). But I would recommend them because the price is REALLY GOOD.

These blackout shades really darken the room! The color is more of a gray than a white. The instructions could have been better. It comes with a box of brackets and screws. The instruction sheet was poor. It went like this, "Step 1 -Install the Brackets", but it didn't say HOW to install the brackets. Take your time - you'll figure it out. It took me 30 minutes for the first one and 10 minutes each for the rest of them. They function really well. I would recommend them.

Me and my husband wanted a light and bright bedroom after living with black velvet for nine years. He works nights and needs to sleep in the day. I was able to use white curtains the sun could filter through on our days off. Then just pull the white blackout blinds down and it feels like night time in the middle of the day. One other feature I love is the confidence the public passer by can not see through my blinds when we need privacy.

    • excellent quality, easy install, and great price!

I've bought very similar products from well known home improvement stores for a lot more money; like 3x-4x more! The lower price here made me wonder if it was of lower quality so at first i only ordered 1 to try out. the quality of the product is identical to the ones I bought at the home improvement store - and i mean identical.. the mounting hardware, the plastic end caps, the design of the roller housing, everything was pretty much identical - the only difference was the price. another concern I had was whether or not I would be able to cut these. since they only come in certain sizes, and windows are not always built consistently, i wanted to be sure I can cut these to any desired length. and the answer is YES - these can be trimmed to size, but only expect to be able to cut about 5-6 inches off each side for the wide ones, and 1-2 inches for the narrow ones. the end caps come right off, and you can wrap up the ends with masking tape and cut it in a miter saw -- cuts from a miter saw in fact are many times smoother finish than the tool they use at the home improvement stores which uses a big blade that can some times crack the plastic instead of cutting a smooth edge. The nice thing is that the available size options are typically very close to many typical window sizes. In fact, out of the 11 shades I bought, I only had to cut 1 of them - the other ones fit pretty well right out of the box. and yes, that's right... after trying out the 1st one, i ended up ordering more for a total of 11! that's how much I liked them. these provide awesome blackout too, which is great for our media room. and it helps keep the heat from the southern California sun out too!

    • Q:

"So, how does this blind open and close, exactly? I'm surprised this item is "cordless" and yet does not mention how one would open & close them in the details. Is it hardwired for a flip of a switch? Do I have to download an app?"

      • A:

They are not "wired" in any way. Tension holds them in place and you lift and lower using a tab on the bottom rail of the blind.

    • Q:

"Are this blinds the same as black out blinds....."

      • A:

        Yes, these are blackout shades.

      • A:

I have these blinds. I am not familiar with black out blinds. But, I am very sensitive to light when I'm trying to sleep. These do a great job of blocking light, as well as heat and cold. We liked them so much we bought them for our guest room.
