The Sankofa symbol is one of the sacred Adinkra symbols of the Akan people of West Africa for centuries. The word Sankofa literally means "Go back for it". The symbol is represented by a forward moving mythical bird with its head turned backwards to retrieve an egg from its back. The egg symbolizes the future.

Story Behind the Art: 

Amani is an experienced carver who employs and mentors many carvers in his enterprise. This opportunity has afforded them much needed income and purpose to their lives by being able to support a family. With the help of African Heritage Collection, he has expanded his skill and business, added more carvers and created additional employment for several villages.
