"In Guatemala, we have more than 720 bird species, but few people seem to care about preserving their habitat. This is my way of showing some of our tropical birds and sharing my respect for nature," Jose Arriola says. Working in ceramic, he creates a set of six ornaments. A toucan, a scarlet macaw and a crested carpenter bird are joined by the almost-endangered blue ocellated turkey and two bright parrots. The ornaments arrive with a pouch of handloomed cotton.

Story Behind the Art:
'My favorite thing to do is to create new designs and I love the challenge of crafting and painting them by hand,' says Guatemala's Jose Arriola. 'Each design is proof of the richness of our culture. Working with ceramics has brought me many beautiful things, from learning the craft from my mother and uncles, to providing for my family so that my four children can go to the university. I already have a grandchild and my wish for all of them is that they become independent people with a career of their choice. That they be responsible and be respectful of God.'
