  • A toy yes, but for the price...

You cannot go wrong. It is a good price, plus I had a coupon, and it was on sale when I bought it... I wonder how much money they made on the transaction??? probably not much. It needs to be set up out of the box otherwise you will get a lot of buzzing off the fret wires. I am not much of a player but it is fun to crank it up and play every once in a while... My Brother in Law who is an accomplished drummer / guitarist made this baby sing. It sounded awesome and all I have is a cheap $100 10 Watt amp for my acoustic. Matter of fact, I am gonna go play it right now! Buy it!

  • A decent instrument

The original Squier Mini-Strat was a pretty cool guitar, when it was released many years ago. It sounded good, it was sturdy, and it was a manageable size for travel and practice. The original design did have a few flaws. The Starcaster Mini-Strat retains some flaws, but greatly improves on others. The finish is great. I could see no paint flaws on the front or sides. The tuners seem to be good quality sealed, non-locking tuners -- an improvement over the original design. This design also has two tone controls. This adds versatility, wiring possibilities, and it was a feature that I had wished that the original Mini-Strat had, when I used to own one. The body seems a lot heavier & thicker, perhaps. The original Mini-Strat was made 2-3 sheets of stacked plywood. From a seam I noticed in the back, it looks like this guitar was constructed from solid planks of wood glued side by side. It sounds like a Strat. It's not overly noisy, though. It seems like a much refined design over the Squier version. The not so good: The way the hardware is, it is pretty much impossible to get correct intonation from the low E string. The decals seem to be bubbling a bit, and I'm not sure they'll still be there as it gets older. The neck seems to have a finish that was not evenly applied. There is a noticiable drip on the back of the neck. Some of the frets are a bit sharp, but they don't seem extreme on mine. None of these "problems" affect the playability other than the intonation problem. Some washers on the bridge help make the intonnation pretty close, though. Obviously, this guitar should be great for kids and younger players. In addition, if you have limited space, this guitar could be a lot more convenient to deal with than a full sized guitar with a huge hard case. This is a great guitar for travel. It's much lighter than a full sized guitar. It is 35" in length, and it will fit in the Squier Mini-Strat gig bag, which is still available. Being electric, you still need an amplifier, but this is about as portable as you can get for an electric without sacrificing quality.
