Happy with the Ravel REP204 Euphonium
I am a rank neophyte in playing or judging a euphonium. I took a big chance in buying this "no-name" horn, with the possibility that I might be disappointed with its tone, valve action, etc. I was somewhat reassured with the Ravel brand, as it was offered by a well known music shop at close to the $$$ list price. However the O/S.com description of the horn didn't say if it came with a case or a mouthpiece? The customer service reps could not tell me. There were only two of these items left, I didn't want to risk losing the low price, so I took a chance and ordered it. Indeed the box shipped to my house did include a nice light versatile case, a mouthpiece, a cleaning cloth, valve oil, and two white cotton gloves, besides a brand new shiny 4 valve euphonium! The price I paid was $$% less than another on-line site offering the same model, both with free shipping and no sales tax. But did it play well? For the price paid, YES! The valves were immovable as received. I unscrewed the valve caps, added oil, and they finally came to life. The other concern is that screwing the valve caps back on the casing is not easy. One has to be patient when doing it. Expect to take up to 30 seconds a valve. I would definitely recommend it as a beginner and high school instrument.
Fun Quality Horn
My horn came well packed and in perfect condition. Not only is it a good looking instrument (matching my high school colors), but it plays great. I use it for Pep Band. it's compact size makes it a very valuable part of the band. The sound is as powerful as it's big brothers, yet can have a very mellow tone if needed. My fellow horners really praised it after seeing and hearing it. It was the best purchase I have ever made at such substantial savings. I firmly recommend this instrument to anyone who enjoys playing!
