The Sportsman Series Hand Crank Emergency Radio is a multi-function palm-sized FM Radio with a weather band feature, an 85 decibel emergency alarm, a cell charger and an LED light than runs on power created by the hand crank. The hand crank power ensures you always have enough juice when power is not available. Keep an Emergency Radio in the emergency supply kit in the car and house, and one in the tent for use at the campsite. This Emergency Radio can also charge basic cell phones, power an 85 decibel emergency alarm, and it also works as a flashlight. Hand cranking for just one minute will provide up to 30 minutes of light, 10 minutes of radio, and 3 minutes of emergency alarm. This emergency radio is constructed of plastic and weighs only six ounces, making it a lightweight and durable accessory that can be used in any outdoor setting. This radio from Sportman's Series is a great option for long camping trips as it requires no battery to operate, leaving extra space in your camp bag for other necessities.

Of course the best thing about this product is that it requires NO batteries ! We are outdoor people and wheather we need a light for night feeding of our horses or are out in the middle of nowhere, camping, it sure is nice not to worry about batteries. It is small, which is another plus for us, and the cell phone charger is GREAT. The sound is very clear on the radio. So, all in all, I'd have to say this is the most used, needed, appreciated item we have bought in a long time !!

    • Perfect for any doomsday event except EMPs
      Verified Purchase

I got this item in the mail yesterday. Pros: -This one however is sturdy and close the the center of gravity while cranking so you are not torquing the crank. -In other words all your cranking power goes into the crank/generator and not into ensuring you are cranking it level. -I cranked on it for over a half hour last night and it charged my cell phone using the external usb adapter. -It has a headset slot for when you need to isolate the weather band to hear it better. -The LED light is bright and energy efficient so one minute of cranking = 10 or so minutes of lighting. -It has an 85-90dB alarm on it and it works very well. My neighbors and dogs can attest to that. -Very light weight and the antenna folds down for easy storage into my bug out bag. Cons: -The AM/FM/WB radio has no dial but it does have a scan button and a reset button to start over. -No internal storage compartment for the USB adapter cable and this one is propitiatory so don't lose it. -The crank is a little noise so if you are planning on a Zombie apocalypse you should be prepared to use only when you know none are around to be attracted to the sound. -The AM/FM stations work great however the WB stations were coming in very faint even when I had it charged pretty well. I however have never heard of a clear WB radio. It does have a headphone jack which would make listening to the WB side much easier. Summary: I will suggest this to all my friends working on making a bug out bag on a budget. Yes it has a few Cons but they are minimal and for the price you can't beat this offer. My suggestion for bug our bags is start with what you can afford now and get entry level so that you have a full bag at a sooner point rather than later. Once the affordable bag(s) are completed then start upgrading the equipment to more expensive and durable products as you can afford them because this process then leaves you with the entry level products as backup (can never have to many of those) or something to help a friend or family member start their bug out bag with. PS: On the EMP part: You should carry all portable electronics meant for doomsday ideally in a water tight faraday cage to ensure they remain safe. - Ensure it is Water Proof or Water Tight. Avoid everything that says Water Resistant.

    • Great Radio
      Verified Purchase

A great radio for money anddddddddddd it works. Alll components ie radio, light, and weather station. It even picked up the Yale station that my large radio won''t pick up ( I live in the valley ). Only thing I did not try is head phone jack. I saved the best for last. It arrived today and we are getting over a severe storm, power outages, trees down etc. So I got to use it TODAY when power went out. Radio reception is excellent. It is small, has hand strap and a pull up handel. Will suggest all my friends to purchase it, money well spent. Soooooo glad I got it in time for todays storm. Just a few weeks ago during an outage and no one to talk to I was quite bored. Don't hesitate buy it. Size only slightly larger than my digital camera in depth only, and looks good too.

    • No AM band
      Verified Purchase

Not a terrible product. Flashlight is bright. Has very loud emergency alarm to signal others if you are lost/stranded. There's no AM band. Only FM and Weather radio. I think it would be good to have in the emergency pack in your car. I wouldn't use it like I dd my other kinetic radio for weather emergencies when the AM radio stations were the ones that provided running local news of the situation. When fully charged, it picks up FM stations pretty well. However, it doesn't hold a charge long at all, and I've yet to get it to successfully find a Weather station on the weather band. There are other kinetic radios out there, similarly priced, that have solar charging that hold a charge much better. I'll be throwing this one in my car, and buying a different one for use in the house.

At first glance, I found this product to be somewhat below my expectations. After removing it from the package I was quite surprised to see how bright the flashlight was. Next, tried the alarm, which was more than adequate. Then, turned the radio on. Here the product fell just a little short. Reception depended on where you stood, but it still worked. The amazing part was the cell phone adaptor. Hooked it up and as I used the crank the cellphone's display showed it was being charged! The handcrank was very sturdy and didn't have that "junk" feeling. All in all, I highly recommend this unit, you'd be foolish not to have one.

    • good for the radio, bad for cell phone charging
      Verified Purchase

The radio was great for the price. It tunes in to both FM and AM stations, and has an antenna. Also has the flashlight function. I didn't know this before ordering, but there's actually another switch built in that will turn on an incredibly loud alarm. That was a bonus; now I don't have to go buy a whistle to add to my emergency kit. On the flip side, I had wanted to buy this radio so that I could use the hand crank to charge my cell phone. Quite honestly, I don't know of any cell phones that use that kind of plug-in adapter. It's a very old style that I haven't seen in a probably a decade (think of the era before USB cables). Just an FYI that it definitely won't plug in to a Blackberry or iPhone. We're still working on figuring out how to keep our cell phones charged in the event of an emergency, without having to rely on a huge stock of batteries.

This little wonder is able to charge your cell ph when power and batteries are gone. Radio and usb port for cell are hand crank charged in an emergency. If you've got sun it is also solar rechargeable. Everyone should try to have this on hand for their families safety.

I bought two of these, one for myself and one for my neice in case of emergencies. I must admit that I didn't get good reception on the fm radio (didn't see a choice for am) but then I'm in San Diego pretty close to the Mexican border and did pick up some of their stations. My neice, on the other hand, lives in Seattle and she said the reception was great. She also liked the cell phone charger feature which she tried. She said it does work (I have tried it) but for a fair amount of time to be achieved it does take a bit of handle turning. I think it said in the instructions that one gets about two mins of cell phone time with a limited amount of effort. She said it was worth it and the handle is not inconvenient or difficult to use.

We we're quite surprised to find such an inexpensive product to work so well. It's not like the Grundig that we payed 3x more for from a camping store some years ago. On the other hand, the Buffalo hand crank was much smaller & perhaps better to pack in a back pack or bug out bag. We haven't used it to charge our Android phone, but have the cable handy in a bag as well as some earbuds for use in event we wanted to listen to an emergency broadcast or whatever w/o alarming a child. It arrived in time for use during Hurricane Florence & Matthew. I would buy another for my own family or a friend .

      Verified Purchase

We used this hand crank radio when we lost power during Harvey. Easily found radio stations giving updates on hurricane progress and flooded areas. Only needs a few cranks to get radio and strong light. The cell phone jack was outdated. Did not fit our iPhone charger cable. Also, when we used the hand crank, we almost always moved the radio dial and lost the radio station temporarily. Otherwise, worked beautifully and kept us connected to the outside world.
