    • Surprisingly tasty... but needs a few things

I took one of these camping. Reasonably tasty (although I added salt, pepper, and cinnamon to most things), surprisingly, and mostly good all around. The instant rice and instant potatoes aren't very good - but then, they're mostly just starch calorie fill. Couple of notes: 1) The pouches don't re-seal (although the bucket does). It's dry goods, and theoretically if you're going to *actually* need them, they'll last open the approximately two weeks for the biggest pouch if you follow the plan... but if you plan on actually using this, pick up some large binder clips or something to hold the pouches closed when not in use. 2) The 1,857 average calories per day did not leave me feeling full. I work out regularly, and burn through about 2,500 calories per day to keep my weight stable, so your mileage may vary. That does lead me into... 3) I ran the math: It only averages about 30 grams of protein per day. FDA recommendations say about one thousandth your body weight in protein per day (about 65 grams for an average adult male). You'll want to supplement your protein from somewhere. Fishing, hunting, or perhaps some of Augason Farms other products (they've got preserved meat tins, vegitarian meat substitute dishes, dry eggs, and probably a few other things) is a fairly good idea if you plan on relying on this. 4) The food is almost entirely vegetable matter, but technically not vegetarian. From what I can tell on the ingredient lists, the closest it comes to meat in here is a tiny amount of chicken fat in about half the items. Few people are picky in emergencies, and I personally think animals are, in fact, for eating (also wearing - I like my leather coat), but something to keep in mind. This does give you enough to get by for a while. The meal plan did not leave me feeling full for long (it's mostly starches, and those digest quickly), though, so in an emergency you're going to be SORELY tempted to burn through your 30 days of supplies in less than that. If you are primarily worried about the power being out for a week due to a storm, this will probably carry you through without issues. If you're planning to use this as a long-term solution, you're going to need to add a few things to prevent nutritional deficiencies, and to help you feel full.

Haven't tried this yet but ate the other dry food from Augason and they were great. This pail looks awesome and has so much food in it, 307 total servings to be exact.

First off. Most people don't open this and use it, as it is for emergencies. So you won't find as many revies as there should be. With that said, I haven't used it, but i have researched it. This is the best bang for the buck. $10 cheaper than wise and you get so much more. This is emergency food with a potential shelf life of 20ish years. I hope to never taste it!! Shipping was very fast and everything came well packed. Close to 2k calories a day. Most others are far less than that. I am sure if your a guy like me(6'3", 240LBS) you will need every bit of 2000 cals. Mostly meatless and "soupish". I am giving this 5 stars for amount of food and calories.

    • Great price for emergency food.

I have been researching prices of emergency food for awhile and this is the best I've found so far, priced per serving. I also appreciate that it comes in a sturdy pail for other uses.

This is the first time I ever tried buying large quantities of survival food. The taste is not as good as buying individual dry soup mixes, but comes in much larger quantities for less money, and the soups can easily be better tasting with a few added spices. The only package that is resealable is the oatmeal, so storage containers are needed for any unused portions.

Great Item and good delivery speed, All items were as listed .. I had one pouch of oatmeal that was not full . It contained about one third of what was in the others, but other than that it was just as expected. Oatmeal pouch was sealed,so I am assuming the machine that filled it messed up.. lol.

    • Good long term storage if you get the right price
      Verified Purchase

I was able to get this 30-Day Pail for $** shipped. It's not always that price, but when you can get it for that price, I believe it is a good deal. The pail is well sealed and very heavy. I have not tried the food, because I'm storing it for emergencies. I especially appreciate the label giving the calorie count. Many food storage companies just list a number of servings without mention of the calories. They can play a lot of games with the serving size if they don't publish the calorie counts. Augason Farms was very open with these details. I am happy with my purchase, and Overstock shipped it very quickly. Since this is overstock, I was a bit worried that the food may have been sitting around for a long time, and it wouldn't have much of the 25 year shelf life left. The date on the bucket was 2013, so it was only 2 years old when it was delivered. Let's hope it has been stored in a temperature controlled building for those 2 years. There's no way to know for sure.

This review may be premature in that I have not opened the bucket yet. I am waiting for an emergency. The shelf life is longer if everything remains sealed. The bucket I received on August 9 2018 was stamped "Best by 23 Sept 2035", so I guess my emergency can happen anytime in the next 17 years. As "survival food" this collection of 307 "servings" is designed to provide high calorie sustenance more than lean food, but there seems to be a reasonable balance between fat, carbs and protein. The package proclaims 30 days of food - apparently for 2 people. The bucket weighs almost 30 pounds -1 pound per day. When you reconstitute the food, it probably weighs in at 5 pounds per day. Assuming the food is edible, this seems like a good value. Especially if you are stranded and cannot get to fresh food.

With products with a set shelf life, I am always concerned that I will receive the items that were manufactured years ago. NOT this item. It was packaged and sealed on Jan 31 2013 with a shelf life as stated...the full 20 years providing it is stored as required.

Can never have enough Emergency Food. Overstock offered a great price so I picked up (2). Solid container and in the event of an emergency, it would be easy to grab and go or if you had to stay in place, just have some water on hand (and a way to heat it, if that's how you roll :) Thanks for offering this Overstock, you can never be to prepared.
