I work with commercial video surveillance all the time, although this system is not commercial quality, many thousands of dollars more. It is great for home use. I'm very pleased
I purchased the LaView system, after several days of researching all other companies NVR/Camera packages. LaView seemed to have by far the most flexible, open, and simple approach to both purchasing & setting up a system. My primary concern was a price-point, but also didn't want to get locked into a "cheap" solution that uses only proprietary cameras, and no ONVIF support. LaView more than met the expectation, as after the delivery I was able to setup & configure the 4 cameras in about 3 hours. The configuration was only less than 15 minutes, after I did the physical install, which was complicated only by layout of walls & attic. The POE nature of the cameras allowed me to get the best signal possible, without a need to run power to each camera. I have also added a non-LaView camera to the NVR, proving that the ONVIF compatibility works great! In summary, I would recommend this to others looking for a reasonably priced system with great quality & expandability.
THE GOOD I have had this system running for approximately two months and am very impressed with the quality of the hardware. The cameras were easily mountable and having a POE system makes wiring and installation a snap. The images are very clear and do not lag ‰ÛÒ both during the day and at night. Technical support was very prompt and helpful via email (I contacted them regarding a firmware update and configuration instructions for email notifications); however, I experienced long hold times for telephone support. The app is straightforward to install and configure, and streams live video flawlessly. You can even setup for multiple NVRs to be viewed simultaneously on your phone (e.g., home, business, vacation home). THE BAD There is nothing particularly bad about the NVR and cameras, but the software could use improvement to be more user friendly and effective. The TV interface, accessible via an HDMI cable, is the worst component. It seems to be impossible to configure the screen to stream, for example, four screens of four video feeds each on a loop with a motion detection highlight (I attempted to do this with the remote control for over 30 minutes, but for unknown reasons, the NVR would not remember my settings). The web interface is much easier to use to configure the system and camera settings (I do not even use the TV menu options anymore). That being said, most of the capabilities of the cameras are not accessible from the NVR, and the default settings did not scratch the surface of the cameras‰Ûª full potential, which was a real disappointment. All camera settings must be accessed via the camera interface, which is not accessible from outside their subnet (you must use an Ethernet cable to link your computer to a free port on the NVR, assign your computer an available IP address, then access each camera‰Ûªs web interface with its individual IP address). Only by this manual method can you truly adjust your cameras‰Ûª settings (DNR, WDR, smart IR, etc.), and there even is the ability to control the image quality separately for day and for night ‰ÛÒ an excellent feature. All of these settings should be accessible from the NVR interface itself. Motion detection is very finicky and it is difficult to configure the settings to reduce false positives, although this is expected for all digital-based motion detection (vs. PIR). There is the capability to schedule times for motion detection, but you can apparently only schedule one time period per 24-hour period beginning at midnight. So, if you wanted to schedule motion detection for two periods during that time ‰ÛÒ for example, 12:00 am ‰ÛÒ 6:00 am and 6:00 pm to 12:00 am ‰ÛÒ you would be unable to do so. The playback feature, both on the app and the web interface, could also use improvement. The ability to view individual camera footage and times are there, but there should be bookmarks created when there is motion so you do not need to watch hours of footage to find an event. Another improvement could be a single-button instant replay feature to seamlessly rewind maybe 10, 15, or 30 seconds back on a particular camera‰Ûªs stored footage. CONCLUSION This is a great system and set of cameras and I am happy so far with my purchase. I think the software could use improvements and the cameras‰Ûª amazing potential is hidden away and disabled by default, but with persistence and experimentation, one can unlock their true capabilities. Technical support appears to be very helpful whenever you have an issue. If you are purchasing these cameras for motion detection alerts, I think you will be disappointed. However, as a video surveillance system, it delivers very well.
