I bought the scanner (v600) primarily to scan color negatives & old photos. So far, its working pretty good w/r to scan quality. Installation: Installation was pretty easy. You plugin the power and USB cable, then install the software. The Epson Scan installs (btw 5-10 minutes) & your running if your computer recognizes the scanner. One thing to pay attention to is be sure to turn the power on on the side. Setup: Overall, setup wasn't difficult. The only complaint is setting up the film holder and putting the negatives in & out of it. It takes a little time, especially if your scanning alot of negatives. I would suggest to Epson if they could make the holder easier by putting a hinge or something that just tilts/opens up to put the film in & snaps close. I would suggest to Epson if you could make the holder easier by putting a hinge or something that just tilts/opens up to put the film in & snaps close. Its kinda painful right now. Scan Quality: From my minimum usage and experience, scan quality seems to be as advertised - so far so good. I've been using the Fully Auto mode which makes it "dead easy" for anyone. I haven't tried the other features like dust removal or ICE yet... but have set the auto mode and we'll see. Thanks for a great product and hope you'll listen (w/r to the holder) and make it better.
Easy installation of the software that came with the scanner. I did not install the Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 that came with the scanner because I have Adobe CS5. The one issue I had with the installation was with the USB cable that was supplied with the scanner. It was dead out of box. The computer did not recognize the scanner when I turned it on even after using several USB ports. I used another USB cable that I had and the computer recognized the scanner immediately. This was a minor annoyance. My first photo scan was excellent. It is hard to tell the original from the copy.
I've used the scanner for 35mm slides that are 40-50 years old. Easy to use, scans well, and the tray worked perfect. Very satisfied with it. However, the front auto scan buttons don't work if you run the cable thru a multi-port USB box so I end up doing the scans thru the software. The spot remover is not very good. You can often see a fade circle where the remover was used. If you're going to digitally clean the images use different software.
Not all that pleased with this one, the cost of the device comes with the expectation that you get something without major downsides. I can list some glaring ones. For starters, I have to restart my PC to get the software to recognize the scanner after being idle. This is incredibly inconvenient and a terrible failure on Fujitsu's part. This is with all the troubleshooting they recommend, which boils down to trying different USB ports, and reinstalling the software. A lot of the time documents get misaligned (Receipts in particular) and do not feed correctly, entering the scanner straight and falling into an angle. While the scanner software does correct and straighten documents scanned crooked, it only detects documents coming through the center of the feed tray and stops a scan prematurely if the receipt has fallen out of that sensors view. Keeping the document or receipt straight in the feed tray is very difficult, even with the guides. When feeding a document 14 inches or longer, the scanner quits scanning at the 14 inch mark and feeds the rest of the paper. The best fix I can come up with is tearing the original document to make two pages for one, and this makes the resulting PDF very confusing when the document contains print on both sides. Overall though, it is a huge improvement over your basic all-in-one printer. The thing that bugs me is that I paid this extraordinary price for a device that requires a lot of coddling. Will not purchase a Fujitsu next time!
