I bought this scanner when my i900 died. It was a good general purpose scanner for medium quality. I needed to scan B&W pictures and the v600 did not have the necessary detail in the shadow area, which is the black in black and white. I returned it and bought a v850. Worth the difference in price. Excellent scans in B&W as well as high dpi color. Very happy with this product.
I used this to scan the family collection of color slides - large and time consuming. I scanned at 2400 dpi so it takes several minutes to scan 4 slides at a time - but I could do other things on the computer while the scan was running. Waiting for 2400 dpi with digital ICE could get old real fast if you just sat there. It is important to keep the glass clear as digital ice did not remove larger lint and dust. The software was very straight forward and the supplied software could be used to largely restore the color of slides that were faded and had lost color balance or slides that were taken indoors under poor light. You get more flexability with this flat bed design than a simple film scanner - costs more but I felt the quality and versatility merited the cost. I did use it for a massive collection of family photos.
I have scanned, B&W Negs, Color Negs, Color slideB&W prints, and documents to PDF. All were very easy to do and I was able multitask while Negs and slides were being scanned, they take a while when scanning at a high dpi. It has been a few year since I purchased a flat bed scan and one of the benefits of this scanner is that it you can open the cover to about a 45 degree angle which make it much faster to load and unload items to be scanned. This may have been around a while but my previous scanner did not have that capability and I ended up breaking a hinge. For me this scanner would be perfect if when scanning document or individual prints I could give each one a unique name rather than having a file name with a number attached.
