I installed the scanner into my laptop the first time I used it and had a hard time using it but it finally worked for 2 days. Then I went to use it about 2 weeks later and it continuously stated it wanted an administrator password which there wasn't any, then it stated it was not connected properly which it was and then it blamed the internet for not working which it was. I then reinstalled the file which did not work so trying again.
I bought this scanner about 2 years ago and have used it heavily doing over 8,000 film scans (mostly 35mm negatives). For the price, I was extremely pleased with this product - I did need to get it replaced at almost a year, but it was under warranty (it was getting a green/red line down each scan). The refurbished one they sent me worked great for about a year and has now started to act up a little. I'm guessing I've probably have used this product more than most people would and not overly upset on this at the price point. Hence the 4 versus 5 stars. The first thing to learn is to REMOVE the panel on the top cover (it slides off) if you want to scan negatives - the instructions were not very clear on this, but I quickly figured this out. The ICE for scratch and dust works well - I still spray my film with compressed air before putting it on the flatbed. The other thing I wish they would have included in the instructions were looking for "Newton Rings" that might show up on some of the scans. At first I thought they were finger prints, but later researched it and it has something to do with the curve of some of the negatives. There are some ways to correct this - the easiest way that I found worked ok was putting the negatives in upside down in the holder (then inverting the picture using the S/W).
I absolutely love this scanner. I have seen similar Fujitsu scanners in the hospital where I used to work...but they were a lot more expensive. So I was dubious when I bought this one. However, I place 1-2 dozen documents in the feeder and watch them fly by on my laptop screen, all of the scanned docs look accurate and clear. I highly recommend this great scanner.
this is only my second Epson scanner since early 2000. my son needed a scanner so I gave him my Epson 4490, which has operated flawlessly since I got it. My Epson 1430 Photo printer does things I could not deo in a darkroom in 5 hours back when I did film photography and is the finest photo printer I have ever seen. the scanner does a wonderful job on photos, negative film and slices and takes only minutes to process and then print and I can do a weeks' worth of photo work in maybe 2 hours sitting in the comfort of my own home. Oh, never, Ever buy anything other than Epson ink or you will regret it seriously and eventually ruin an Epson printer... Superb products..!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most Sincerely, Haggiez
