Projector Buying Guide
Projector Buying Guide from Overstock.com. Our guides provide customers with information about projectors.
Great projector for the money. Excellent picture quality. Projecting on a 130" diagonal screen. Can project from front or rear ceiling or table. Auto detect for input works well. Small size and comes with a nice carrying case. No lens cap, but not really that big of a deal. Has horizontal and vertical correction, keystone correction, and numerous picture setup functions to customize. Although the factory settings are great. I can't speak to the 3D, but it says it's capable. The three mounting holes on the bottom are metric. It has one slightly larger mounting hole in the center of the three which is a 1/4-20 thread, but I was not comfortable hanging from the ceiling with one screw. So had to get some metric bolts from the hardware store. M4 I believe. It does not come with a user manual but you can get it online. http://www.optomausa.com/products/detail/TW556-3D#...

I searched long and hard for the best quality projector for the price. My requirements would be one with a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio, high native aspect ratio, an HDMI port with some HD capability, audio out port, and a somewhat high contrast ratio. In addition to using a projector for classroom settings, we wanted to watch football games and movies because if you can get a screen that is the size of your wall, you're going to use it for entertainment, not just lectures. If I was going to make a major purchase, I wanted it to be top notch so I wouldn't be disappointed. I was going to spend some money, but I wasn't going to go overboard. This projector met all I was looking for. Expected projector features included: Vertical Keystoning. VGA ports: Almost all computers have this Eco mode to extend lamp lifetime A Zoom feature: Easy to adjust the size of the image, but it is a short image adjustment. Easily transportable. We can take it down and set it up pretty quickly. Some extra physical features I got include: Built in speaker, a little more powerful than than a laptop speaker, although about the same quality sound This is the only projector in this price range with the highest contrast ratio I found This product is pretty new as it was released this past summer. The image quality is amazing. I had a 158 inch screen sitting 13 feet away and couldn't make out individual pixels. Right now we are using two bed sheets pinned together. The colors at night are rich and wonderful. In the daytime we are still able to enjoy the big screen, but the daylight washes out the image a bit. We have both covered and uncovered windows in the room, but no direct sunlight coming in those windows. We're planning on replacing the bed sheets with a screen which should, in our situation, improve our daytime experience. The projector's best output image is 720p HD, not 1080p (but can convert the 1080p image down). Projectors that have 1080p and comparable features are at least twice as expensive. I thought I might miss 1080p HD with this 720p projector, but I was wrong. My family will gladly trade off 1080i football games on a 42 inch screen for 720p on a 158 inch. The eco lamp mode is nice. It's a great trade off as the mode just slightly dims the image brightness and users get an estimated 2000 more hours on the lamp. It just keeps a little money in the wallet. The lamp price is placed about the middle out of other projector lamps. The audio out is nice since we use it to play the sound on decent external stereo speakers. The sound comes through quite well. However, the projector is incompatible with a common audio frequency. It took me a long time to figure that out what the issue was. It doesn't support 48.0 KHz for the Dolby Digital format. Make sure you disable it on your devices. If the frequency on that format is enabled, then it'll play a horrible sound which could probably ruin your speakers. Seems that all my movie devices like that frequency, but it is a simple one-time fix.. This projector doesn't have a lens cover/cap. It is a cheap piece of plastic that provides easy extra protection from debris, dust, and objects. We haven't been able to whip anything up as a viable replacement either. Since this a DLP projector, I have noticed some colors with white text and objects moving across dark backgrounds. Sometimes I can see it when the text isn't moving as well. But it doesn't bother me because that happens so infrequently and you just need to read the text, not admire the details of the text like you would a say an animated picture. I haven't pointed the rainbow effect out to others and they haven't mentioned anything either. You don't get the effect with an LCD, but there weren't any competitively priced that matched this projector's qualities. This projector can get hot and can possibly burn you. I recommend you turn on the high elevation mode whatever elevation you find yourself at. I also recommend turning on eco or eco+ mode to reduce power consumption which will also help reduce heat. Like most projectors, keep it in an open ventilated area when using it and clean out any dust that builds up. I'm sure the heat battle is what every projector manufacturer deals with though. I have looked at the other features and played around with them, but the things I've already mentioned are what is most important and most used in my family. We probably won't use the 3D feature in the near future as we don't have any 3D content and purchasing the required gear is a lot for getting only so little. If you're looking for a projector, I would recommend this for those looking for similar features I was. However, you should check out www.projectorcentral.com. Not only do they have some good information about projectors, you can search their large database for projectors by the features you want. As of August 2012, this is the best quality projector I found with an acceptable price tag. I would buy this projector again even with the lack of a lens cap and disabling that sound setting on my devices. When I'm using the projector, I forget about any drawbacks and am instead truly enjoying how awesome it all really is.Read More
