  • Best GPS among 4 brands I have tried.
    Verified Purchase

I have owned 4 GPS. The first one was as Sony in Dec 2008. Its software/interface was good, but its battery died and power connection became loose within a year. Next I bought a Garmin in 2010. Its hardware is good. Till today it is still working, but its software is horrible. It often chooses the most stupid route to go around and around. I am a professional driver. So I know there the shortest or fastest routes are. Garmin is often wrong. If you input more than 5 destinations onto a trip, the system often crash and you lose all your effort of inputting the addresses. Next I bought a Tomtom in 2011. Its software is better than Garmin in many aspects and it is a voice recognition type. But its ability to recognize any one's voice is terrible. And it can only accept up to 4 addresses in one trip for its multi-destination function. Also, it takes way too many steps to input an address. It seems whoever designed the software is a super conservative person. He added many redundant steps. So it takes forever to input an address. I literally have to pull over to safely input the address because it takes so long to do one. Worse yet, Tomtom’s hardware is the least dependable. In the summer, when it is too hot, the GPS freezes and completely stop working. You can’t even re-start it. In the winter, when it is too cold, it freezes too and can’t even re-start. So I had to bring my old Garmin with me as a back up when Tomtom freezes. I eventually called Tomtom customer service about the issue. They said they are not aware of the issue in their database, but they exchanged me the GPS with a refurbished one. I used the refurbished “new” unit for 5 months, then it stopped receiving GPS signals. That’s the end of the story. Tomtom finally quit on me. So I quit Tomtom. That event made me to buy another GPS, which is the Magellan Roadmate. I chose this model because it has a larger screen display and a mult-destination function. I have used it for a few weeks now and I am very happy with its interface. You can enter an address very quickly in just 4 steps, menu, city, street name and street number. If it were Tomtom, it would have added many steps of “confirmation” or “click OK.” Tomtom feels like a very “wordy” person. Magellan’s multi-destination feature doesn’t set a limit of how many destinations, which is excellent. Also its selection of routes is excellent. I am really happy with it. When I ordered it online, my wife asked me why didn’t choose a “top brand.” I said just because some brands advertise more, it doesn’t mean they are the top brands. I have tried Garmin and Tomtom. I don’t like either one of them. So what do I have to lose to try Magellan? It turn out my gamble paid off. Magellan is better by far. Although each brand has many different models, each brand has about the same interface/software design and similar level of hardware reliability. That’s why in this review I am not stressing on the model but on the brands.
