I am so pleased with this scanner. I have slides that are 40 years old and the dust spots are numerous. Before using the ice feature I spent weeks editing the spots out one at a time. Now editing is a breeze. I just crop and straighten (If necessary) and I"m through. The colors come through beautifully. There are some slides that require color adjustment, but that is not the fault of the scanner. I couldn't be happier. Avoiding all of those tedious editing chores makes this scanner with the ice feature well worth the money. Before you scan the first time I do advise you to scan 4 slides over and over using different settings so that you know what gives you the best results. Epson provides you with a preview of your photo and you can cancel the scan if you are not satisfied. Once you have found the best settings you can save them and not have to repeat the process. I give this scanner 5 stars; something I have never done before.
This is a very versitile scanner. I like being able to load up the flatbed with prints and designate the print area for each along with individually noting which are scanned with various enhancements. The negative scanning is not quite as easy and both the directions and negative holders could be improved (and perhaps have on the newer models). The scans are reasonably quick (except if one uses high resolution which may be needed for negatives but not for prints). There are a few issues that prevent a 5 star rating. The scanner does no scan the entire flatbed, so one has to be very careful when placing prints on it to be scanned. It can be quite annoying having to reposition to get the print scanned edge to edge. Document scanning is not as easy as on other scanners. The preview gives you a false impression that the document will not scan correctly unless one boosts brightness and or contrast.
I bought this scanner about 2 years ago and have used it heavily doing over 8,000 film scans (mostly 35mm negatives). For the price, I was extremely pleased with this product - I did need to get it replaced at almost a year, but it was under warranty (it was getting a green/red line down each scan). The refurbished one they sent me worked great for about a year and has now started to act up a little. I'm guessing I've probably have used this product more than most people would and not overly upset on this at the price point. Hence the 4 versus 5 stars. The first thing to learn is to REMOVE the panel on the top cover (it slides off) if you want to scan negatives - the instructions were not very clear on this, but I quickly figured this out. The ICE for scratch and dust works well - I still spray my film with compressed air before putting it on the flatbed. The other thing I wish they would have included in the instructions were looking for "Newton Rings" that might show up on some of the scans. At first I thought they were finger prints, but later researched it and it has something to do with the curve of some of the negatives. There are some ways to correct this - the easiest way that I found worked ok was putting the negatives in upside down in the holder (then inverting the picture using the S/W).
I bought this scanner about a month ago. Since then I have been scanning 35mm slides and negs, 2.25 transparencies and negs 4-6 hours every day. (Retirement is grand!). The scanner has performed flawlessly, producing beautiful digital files every time. I have not used the digital Ice feature nor the auto color adjustments, so I can't speak to them. I found the sharpening feature to be over sharpened on the pre-set "Manual" setting, but have lovely results on the "Low" setting. I was a professional photographer for 30+ years with images in multiple stock photo agencies, so I have a collection of images to scan that's going to take me some considerable length of time (don't worry . . . I don't plan to scan them all). If this scanner continues to perform as well as it has so far, I will be very happy. Actually, if it doesn't last through 30,000 scans, I would probably buy another one just like it. At this price point, it would absolutely be worth it. My only complaint and the reason for not giving 5 stars, is that the instructions are so poor. The "owner's manual/ instructions" is so convoluted and difficult to follow that it's worthless to all intents and purposes. If it weren't for U-Tube videos, I think I would still be figuring out how to use this scanner.
