We purchased this scanner to scan our 100+ page Policy Manual. We had lost the original Word® files and needed to restore them. By sending 50 pages at a time through the GT-850 and producing PDF files, we zipped through the whole manual. We them opened each page in Word® and made the necessary corrections. Formatting was preserved very well and only a few glitches of special characters were noted. A job well done. We are now scanning our paper archives to electronic files for preservation. We highly recommend this machine.

  • My favorite office machine!

This is now an older model but I like it better than the newer ones (which I also own!). I've used one for 3 years, this is my second one. It has a display which is useful to make sure it is on and ready. The newer ones only have an idiot light which doesn't tell you anything. The GT-S50 also weighs about twice what the new ones do, which makes me think it has more substantial motors and power supply. It scans giant mixed stacks of documents with only rare jams. It is my favorite office machine!

I have been using the scanner for 4 years without any significant problems except it sometimes misfeeds. I believe the misfeed is due to the condition of the paper I'm feeding. It always amazes me how it can grab just one sheet, from a large stack, and feed it through. I didn't give it 5 stars because the output tray could be larger (extend out); i.e., a large stack of paper, fed through, gets jammed on the output tray -- this requires me to monitor the output tray if a large stack of paper (15 sheets or more) is being scanned.

The scanner brand new needed a lot of baby sitting of the paper being fed into the scanner. It says it can scan more than 20 pages at a time without multiple pages being sucked in together, however, I am down to feeding 4 pages in at a time now, as it will start to suck multiple pages if I put more than 4 pages in at a time. however, scanning pictures works great, the quality of the finished scan is beautiful.

We keep almost no paper documents since we started with the GT-S50! It was easier to keep some due to the need to load, turn the document over for double sided items and the snail speed for a long document. All of this is history with the GT-S50 Scanner!!! I am delighted. It scans quickly, clearly with automatic page reduction and double sided. If you want to end the mountains of paper storage, get a Pro GT-S50 and eliminate the junk paper dilema.

  • Great scanner!!
    Reviewed at

The GT-S50 works great! Scans are consistently good quality, no misfeeds or shredded documents (5,000 pages and counting). Recommend it for personal or small workgroup scanning of documents of up to ~50 images. Scanning larger documents (to one PDF) is likely to take a while because after the computer converts a scanned image, it must then append it to the PDF file ... which takes progressively more time as the file size grows. After about 25 images, the scanner starts slowing down. At 50 images, it's crawling (from 20 PPM to 1 PPM). My computer is a new MacBook Pro with the fastest processor, has lots of processing power ... and the GT-S50 consumes every bit of it. The only issue I've experienced was during setup. The quick start guide says to install the software first, then connect the scanner. The software CD wouldn't install automatically so I located the folder on the CD with the software and manually installed it. The installed software didn't work. I then went to the Epson Support website (under Mac OS X - Lion) which said don't use the CD, just connect the scanner and Mac OS X will discover it and install the correct driver(s) ... which it did. Nice if Epson updated the quick start instructions to save this bit of extra (unnecessary) work. A nit: all of the bundled software (OCR, bizcards, etc.) are Windows apps. Nice if Epson would reflect this in their product materials. Bottom line: if you have a Mac, you get a scanner ... no software. :-(

Ordered a workforce GT-S80. Arrived seemingly intact. Problems with freezing after installation. I live in the middle of nowhere. All epson could do is suggest I take it too a service center. My deadline has passed and I am returning my unit. Too bad, looked like possibly a good unit. Support is paramount when it comes to matters like this as is time.

  • Stopped Feeding

Great looking and working machine but it stopped feeding in just over one year with little use. I've had many machines with feed in my life and none stopped completely. You press start, nothing feeds, but it scans "nothing" to a pdf.

  • Quite happy with the Epson GT-S50

I just opened the box and installed the scanner in about an hour. Right off the box I was able to make it work very well and smoothly. I must admit that I had read reviews from others and was mentally prepared for difficult start up. I do agree that Epson Scan software and User's Guide on the disk leave a lot to be desired. The Guide is heavily hyperlinked, that is, nothing is fully explained in that subsection! You end up having to click several hyperlinks to get the idea as to how it works. But once I understood it, thanks to others' reviews such as 180 degree orientation to feed paper bottom first to avoid staple hole problems, it was easier to use the machine. Scanner in itself was impressive! The scanning speed, LCD display, 75 page auto feeder, and all the features packed in a small size and at a fairly good price, made me feel very good about the purchase I made. If not for the software and User Guide, I would call this a 5 star product. My primary targeted use is going to be scanning drawer full of documents to go paperless. I have not tried color documents, photos, or biz cards, but I think it will work out just fine.
