Follow the directions exactly, very important to make sure the fabric is placed under the ruler folded so that the grain of the fabric is straight. There are lots of videos showing how to do this. I have cut up to 6 layers, or 3 different fabrics folder in half with little problems, like any cutting a sharp blade is required. I use 2 small 3 lbs dumbbells to hold the ruler in place and have not had an issue with the ruler slipping. The plastic is thicker than I expected based on other reviews. The ruler is a little wobbly when you pick it up and move it around but that is probably due to the many slots in the ruler as much as the type of material.

As a designer, I generally lay out materials in pica measurements. My plastic pica ruler was chewed up by my puppy & I needed a replacement. This stainless steel ruler is perfect!

This 6" x 6" quilters square works great from Omnigrid, the only rulers I use. I do reccomend putting a clear backing on it to make the writing last longer, My average use for a ruler like this with out the backing on it is about 6 months, the friction against the material wears off the print over long use,. When I use my clear backing reccomend from Elenor Burns, it last way long

What's not to like. The 2 bottom shelves take letter sized items (2-pocket folders, paperwork), the top shelf is split with the back 3 inches used for small items (using the plastic 3 section organizer insert) and the front part of the shelf good for storing letters, bills. The plastic 3 section organizer insert is easily removed and you can use the entire width of the back section for 12" rulers and other longer items. There is no back to the bottom shelf (the middle and top shelf have a back) so I push it against a wall to avoid items being pushed through and falling out the back. The vertical slots are great for standing up folders and composition notebooks but there is nothing to prevent you using it to organize taller items. I really like this piece. The price is right and it does the job.
