First of all, the price dropped since I ordered this item until I received the request to review it. Second, the stand has good and bad points. The base is lightweight and is not too stable but it holds the frame. It does not rotate forwards and back because the bent frame won't accommodate the width of the assembled frame. The split dowels are too long and the knobs catch if you shorten the dowels to exactly the width of the bent frame. I exchanged the top two knobs for wing nuts and shorter side bars so it now spins 180 degrees. The frame will rotate, clockwise 360 degrees which is useful if you were working on a skinny piece but it couldn't be longer than the length of the dowels. I too have a handy husband who assembled and made adjustments but ultimately I scavenged parts from past stands and frames to make this work. As for adjustability, think of this frame as you would your leg or arm. It has joints that can be bent to suit your most comfortable position but it has limitations. Buy some pine or alder and recut what doesn't work for you. The stand has some good advantages but needs to be clearer on what it promises and can't fulfill. I am thinking of returning this and making my own from a previous stand design but the changes I made to adapt this stand are working for now. I am really enjoying the hardware on this stand. The knobs are much easier to tighten and loosen. They hold their position well. It would be a great improvement in design to have a place to clip a light. I lay my pattern on top of my work and move it from side to side as needed. In that sense the length of the dowels has its advantages.
I am very happy with this item. This holds my scroll cross stitch frames, so that I can stitch in a relaxed position with both hands free. I just set the frame on top of my legs. It stays on my lap great. I like that I can adjust the position closer or farther away depending on my need.
This seems to be a good product. I have not had it long enough to tell how it will hold up over time which is why I have given it a basic 3 star ( average) rating. It feels sturdy enough to last with reasonable handling. It is simple to set up and offers easy access to the front and back of projects. It is probably best NOT to to dis- and re-assemble frequently, although I did not have the problem other purchasers have written about with moving parts (that shouldn't). Mine works fine- no wobbles or unplanned twists. It seems good for small projects or even gentle travel. The price was cheap enough that it will not be tragic if it doesn't last for years. The most annoying part of the process was how long it took Overstock (or the USPS) to get it to me. Based on the tracking info, it sat in some regional post office (or center) for almost two weeks before finally resuming its journey to my home. I have since found similar items for the same or slightly cheaper prices at other sources and will probably not use Overstock again unless there is simply no alternate source.
