I was winding two types of yarn with it so far- bulky woll mix, and it worked perfectly without any problems. My main reason for buying it was a thin linen yarn I bought-very thin, like sewing thread. It worked okey with it with some small problems-one, when you start winding the yarn, the slot, that holds the beginning, is too large to hold very thin yarn-I solved by putting on top a small piece of crumpled paper, and it worked quite well. Another thing is, that when the yarn jams, the ball tends to slide over and gets not even-strands roll outside the ball. I am not sure, since I never used any other yarn winder, but I think, the ones with ball facing up, would have less of the problem with this. You definetely have to use swifter with yarn winder, especially for the thinner yarn. Overall, I think it is a nice winder for the price.
I hope I am not over-rating this item as I am about to learn to use circular knitting needles. The quality appears to be excellent. I like the idea of having each needle size.
