Juki HZL-DX7 Computerized Sewing and Quilting Machine

If you are looking for a high-performance machine that is still light on the budget and easy to carry around, the Juki HZL-DX7 is exactly what you are need! Focusing on making a machine that is user-friendly, efficient, and full of great features, this sewing machine is what every sewist would love to own.

The Juki HZL-DX7 is one of the higher end machines that Juki makes. It can be used to make even and consistent straight stitches, great zigzag stitching, and beautiful free-motion quilting.

For beautifully even stitches, the Juki "box feed" is integrated into this machine, ensuring consistent and even fabric feeding. The HZL-DX7 handles thicker fabrics and layers beautifully thanks to this unique feeding system and can stitch through any type of fabric whether lightweight, heavyweight, or stretch.

If you would like your quilts to come out beautifully without any stitch pulling, just set the Juki HZL-DX7 to sew with the presser foot lifted and floating ever so slightly at a setting of your choice.

Button holes are created with ease through the sensor buttonholing system that Juki uses. There are 16 choices of buttonholes types so you can choose which one best suits your project.

With the Juki HZL-DX7, you can select patterns and stitches with the touch panel and choose from 80 stitches including alphabetical/numerical fonts!

There are buttons that are easy and quick to select that control the machine, including reverse or lock stitch, thread trim, needle up or down, start or stop, and auto-lift presser foot. You can also assign a function to the foot switch/pedal's heel portion for easy access.

Sewing speed on the Juki HZL-DX7 can be adjusted to a maximum of 1050 stitches made in a minute. For ease of use, if you need to sew on tight corners or be particularly precise with your stitches, you can use the low-speed or inching sewing function. Your stitches can also be adjusted in length or width with the easy adjustment dial.

The machine comes with 30 accessories, and includes the Juki warranty of 5 yrs mechanical parts, 2 yrs electronic parts, and 90 days on defects whether of workmanship or material.

TLDR: I'm very satisfied with this machine, service from Sew Vac Direct (both answering questions before my purchase and then the delivery) and the experience buying from overstock.com. I am excited to finally start sewing together the quilt pieces and blocks Mom has shown me and learning a lot of new skills from this fabulous machine! I bought this machine after searching lots of reviews online and watching all the YouTube videos I could find. I'm probably an intermediate level sewist, I feel like I know a good bit about textiles and am comfortable with crafts, but didn't have a machine I could work with. I've done a number of home mending or hemming tasks and made two quilts with assistance from my mom. I work in IT so the software features of this machine seemed very powerful and this does stitches I'd only seen in the past on dedicated embroidery sewing machines. I really wanted to buy from a local dealer and couldn't find anyone who carried Juki near Madison, WI when I was ready to purchase (during Christmas sales) although I learned after the fact that the quilt shop in Waunakee is an authorized dealer and repair facility. I'd been looking at Singer, Brother, and Viking machines at the other shops around town but just didn't feel inspired or awed by them until I saw videos of the Juki HXL-F600 (a different mechanically controlled home sewing machine) As I researched that other machine, I found this model on Overstock and had a new research quest. Why had I never seen this magnificent creation before? Well, I'd probably never even looked for it because, until Juki released the fully computerized HZL-NX7 in June 2018, this was the top of the domestic sewing line and way out of my price range. That new machine retails for about $3500, and I think this listed around $1800 before it was bumped off its pedestal. This is still the lowest price Juki I saw with a floating presser foot. But then I learned of highly recommended online retailers for Juki (all selling it for $1399) and found one of them, Sew Vac Direct, on Overstock right as a 21% off coupon landed for Christmas. Suddenly this was right in my price range and seemed like the perfect machine! The machine was delivered within four days after ordering, in the best packed box I've ever seen. The Juki box was packed within a larger box, completely surrounded with packing peanuts. There were no scuffs or scratches on the outer box and FedEx brought it right to the door for a signature. All accessories were there as described in the trilingual manual although I had to check the accessory box twice to find the second set of assorted needles and buttonhole attachment. Hint: the box is a double decker, the top tray lifts out! This comes with plenty of accessories, I don't need to buy anything to get started unless I just want the quilter accessory kit for the open toe quilting and pearl cording feet (among others). I finished inventory and setup over the last few days and initial operations have been very intuitive. I could have set it up and started sewing the same night if I'd had things ready to go but I didn't have my fabric prepped to test sample stitches. The touch screen is super sensitive (seems capacitive) and all the markings on the machine are very self explanatory. I was nervous to change speed settings without experience because I'm not ready to sew 1050 stitches/minute on a new machine but default "turtle" speed barely advances the fabric. OTOH, it does let you see exactly how the box feed dog works, and the fabric does seem to keep straight almost on its own in spite of the lifeless muslin I was using to test stitches. I'll definitely back my pieces with fusible interfacing before I start the next homework marathon and stitch samples of all 287 stitches with the 11 presser feet! I experienced a little user error as I tried to set up my first stitches but I just didn't have the top load bobbin threaded right. This is my first top load machine. After rethreading everything four times, experimenting with tweaks to top and bottom thread tension dials and glaring at the loops of thread under my samples, I found a YouTube video about top loading bobbin problems. I watched that twice, checked my manual for the nth time and, sure enough, I didn't get the thread through the labeled #1 notch in the case, which is the bobbin tensioner. After that correction, I changed both tension dials back to the factory settings and it ran fine. (Kudos to Juki for having a big cutout in each dial to mark default settings, and the dials have a definite snap when you get them in "home" position.) That exercise gave me a lot of practice with the bobbin door but I'm still going to be very careful with that. The only dire warning I read online is the straight stitch plate (controlled by a slide lever under the bobbin plate) has a microswitch that limits the machine to straight stitches when engaged so you don't break the needle. The plate is described in the manual and there is truly a one line warning to not take off the presser plate for cleaning with that engaged, but an online blogger said ignoring that warning can break the microswitch and lock your machine into straight stitches until the switch is replaced. I was apprehensive about how delicate a computerized machine might be but the machine isn't a complete prima donna either. I accidentally choose sample stitch 14 from the "basics" panel that took a different presser foot than the default foot A (which came installed) and the machine didn't complain at all. I was lucky I only got an ugly sample from the experience but it was completely avoidable if I'd looked at the panel one more time before starting. The screen has a very nice large display of the stitch number, presser foot to use (picture and identifying letter), stitch length and stitch width on a pale blue background. That and the LED work surface lights provide excellent visibility (see picture of the machine in the room that desperately need task lighting). I'll read more of the manual to be sure I've got the basics but this is going so well I'll probably start some little projects and learn on the job. The manual is enormous, extremely well written with excellent diagrams that look exactly like the machine. My second picture from the manual shows the attachments that come with this machine (sorry the included extension table is shown on a different page). There's also a 35 minute DVD to walk through the controls and how to set up the machine. I think that also shows how to program the foot pedal features (presser foot up, reverse stitch, lock stitch or thread cutting). That's all I've mastered in a few days but I'm confident it will teach me a lot of techniques. I had a brief flood of self doubt when I saw Juki ads for the DX2000-QVP model, "by quilters for quilters", then I learned it is essentially a twin to this except it comes with the quilting accessory pack. I thought I'd seen in its brochure that the DX2000 has 240 stitches (this has 287) and that machine lists for $1199 at Juki retailers. Sorry for such a long and rambling review, but I wanted to share the information I'd learned about this machine and give a fair description of life with it so far. If my projects go as well expected, I will probably want a Juki serger next year!
