I consider myself a very experienced sewest, and teach sewing and textile arts. I have owned every brand of machine under the sun (well almost, Singer is out of the question unless it is my mom's 301!) and have paid A LOT more money on machines with all the bells and whistles-so I have paid 6 or 7 times more than I did for this refurbished machine! As an instructor, I get to help students master their machines, so I have seen them all. I have always been impressed by Brother machines. Due to economics, I have sold off my super high-end machines, and with experience, have found, for my needs, I only really need a heavy duty straight stitch, which I got (a Janome-all it does is straight stitches, sort of a home industrial), and a machine that offers a buttonhole, needle up/down (MANDATORY!), and some fancy fun stitches to play with. I did a bunch of research, and tried out a Janome Magnolia, but could not stand the poorly positioned buttons for reverse, etc.-their function buttons were at an angle, so you could not see the buttons while sewing. I returned it, and decided, what the heck, at $$$. with the same features but better than Magnolia, why not take a chance. I know, one thinks "refurbished-what, was it dropped from a high rise?" But I think most of the time, these "refurbished" models are those sent back due to operator error, not reading the manual, or just novice sewers starting up and not knowing certain tricks that make sewing trouble-free. Anyway, the machine got here in the stated time frame, wrapped up like it had never been out of box, and looks totally brand new. I have been sewing all kinds of fabrics on it and am very impressed! Of course, there is a change of needle for specific fabrics, but the feed dogs are great on it. Great screen size and back light. Tons of buttonhole options, decorative stitches, and an alphabet. TONS of information furnished too-if you are experiencing any trouble (which I have not been, only operator-error ones that can happen on ANY machine from any price range, or brand!) there is a very detailed manual that one can reference (and learn basic sewing with, it is very extensive), phone number pages and stickers galore to call their customer service, and a DVD to watch. If anything I would change on machine is more lighting, but I will just get an adjustable, high-powered sewing machine light one can mount on machine; I would offer a different place to mount second spool holder on, so when I wind a bobbin, I don't have to un-thread machine (could get a side winder for that, or wind bobbins on my Janome). But these are very, very minor wishes that can I can fix if I want (lighting, YES, bobbin winding, I don't really care that much). All in all, this is a great value for the money. Do NOT be afraid of "Refurbished". The discounted price is your gain!

I finally replaced my loyal old (1960's) cast iron Necchi. I'd bought a more modern (but cheap) Necchi, and it was complete crap, so I had doubts about all cheap modern plastic sewing machines. I didn't feel I needed a computerized machine or fancy stitches - just sturdy and basic. (I sew as a hobby, but using lots of heavy fabrics - I'm rough on sewing machines.) I'd thought of Brother as mainly a printer company and not a 'serious' sewing brand. I'm glad I was wrong; I've been delighted with this machine! Pluses: I don't quilt, but the wide detachable platform is great for the large projects I work on, and there is still a free arm, which wasn't mentioned in the description. The automatic needle position is something I didn't think I needed, but I love it - it can be set to finish each seam in the up or down position, but one button push will move it to the other position. Threading the machine is the easiest I have used, requiring no poking of thread ends through little holes or setting the handwheel just right, and unlike my 'crap' machine, doesn't come unthreaded due to varied speed of sewing. I also LOVE not having to hold the thread ends when starting a seam. The needle threader and bobbin winder require a little practice to get the right 'touch', but work well. The various stitches are easy to access, and I've used far more of them than I expected to. Minuses (minor): The light weight of it seemed cheap at first, and it does move a bit when I really get working, but I put a rubber grip pad underneath, and it's been better. And it is really easy to carry around! The delicate plastic bits (the spool holder and bobbin cover, etc) seem fragile, but a friend who uses these in her sewing school told me she's never had a problem, and I've not lost or broken them yet - so far, so good. The lack of a feed-dog drop button for free stitching bothered me at first, until I figured out to use a drop-feed quilting stitch setting and the walking foot - it is doing very well for me. There is also no reverse button. The button to backstitch the seam ends (one stitch a a time, slowly) is OK, but now and then I wish I could just sew backwards without switching to the walking foot and free stitching mode. Biggest minus: This machine's fastest speed is much slower than on my old machine, which gets frustrating on long seams, and it remains my greatest annoyance. It isn't horrible, just annoying. I was uncertain about buying a reconditioned machine. This one is in perfect condition, though, and looks brand-new. In general, I am really delighted with this machine - it is far better than I expected, especially at this price. Wish I'd bought it years ago!

My previous sewing machine was purchased more than 40 years ago and things sure have changed! It's taking me a while to become familiar with the XR1355 — more pushbutton controls than my old machine and sometimes in different locations. I knocked a star off because of the bobbin. It has been difficult for me to thread the bobbin correctly. The bobbin thread is supposed to be passed through a slit which guides it into the tension-adjusting spring. There is a flexible plastic cover over the spring and it's very easy to pass the thread under just the plastic rather than through the spring. The spring is not visible and I can't tell if the bobbin thread is in the right place. Fortunately, I found an illustration on page 41 of the user's guide which shows how the thread should appear after sewing. I just sew on some scraps and check that the thread is in the correct position. I know then that I've got it into the tension-adjusting spring. If it's not, I have to try again to get it there. Perhaps part of the problem is that I'm a guy and my hands and fingers are larger than a woman's. Maybe it would be easier to get the thread into the spring with more nimble fingers. While we're talking about bobbins, I've discovered that it's worth the extra expense to purchase genuine Brother bobbins — SA156. You can get 10 for around $5 on Amazon. I tried with some generic SA156 "style" bobbins and had problems. As long as I have the thread in the spring, I've never had any issues with the genuine bobbins. I did go the generic route for presser feet, however. Brother wants close to $100 for a walking foot for the XR1355 and that's ridiculous. I purchased a Distinctive brand walking foot for around $35 and it's been doing fine. I also purchased a set of 25-30 assorted feet. Some were duplicates of ones that had come with the machine but I especially wanted a ¼" piecing foot. I'm learning quilting (the excuse to purchase a new sewing machine!) and that uses a ¼" seam allowance. As it turns out, I could achieve a ¼" seam allowance by using stitch #43 or #44 with the standard zig-zag foot. The wide table is easy to install and remove and makes maneuvering a large project much easier. So far I have only completed a baby quilt and found the wide table handled it without any problems. All in all the XR1355 does a fine job of the kind of sewing I plan to do (quilts, curtains, pillows, etc. — no plans for clothes). It has enough bells and whistles to satisfy my male love of gadgets but is straightforward enough to get the job done. I consider it money well spent.

I bought this Machine xr1355 for my wife as I had just purchased her an Embroidery Machine a few weeks earlier to use and she decided she wanted to make a quilt with the embroidery patterns she had. This machine was delivered and even though it says Factory Refurbished you would never know it. there is not a mark on it and it runs great. It is very easy to use and my wife was able to sew the quilt together in only two days using this machine and she had never sewn before with a machine. the automatic needle threading does take some time to master but once you do it is a lot easier than threading by hand.the machine shows you pictures of the stitch patterns and you enter the numbers on the digital screen and it tells you what presser foot( the machine comes with 8 quick change presser feet) to use for that stitch with a little letter above the stitch number on the screen. the machine can be adjusted so you can sew really slow until you feel comfortable with it and adjust the speed up as you feel more comfortable sewing. The wide table makes sewing larger items so much easier and it comes off if you do not need it or want it on very easily. you do not need to use the foot pedal but if you want to it connects with a simple plug into the back of the machine.I did a lot of research on machines before buying this one and I am glad I bought her this one it has been everything it promised to be and more. She loves all the stitch choices, First thing she did when we got it up an running was take a old piece of scrap cloth and tried all the stitch designs out, and was amazed at how easy it was and how nice they all came out. Between this machine and her Disney embroidery machine she is having a lot of fun making Blankets and quilts and shirts these two machine have opened her up to a fun new world that she is really enjoying.

This machine arrived early which made me so happy. I almost missed this deal but Overstock was my lucky choice. This machine is fun and easy to use. It says refurbished but to my surprise it looked brand new nothing is refurbished to my naked eyes. I also suggest keeping the user manual close by as a reference because it is full of information, especially about the 180 stitches. Everyone that purchases this machine should at least flip through the manual, it is easy to read and understand. It does have all the stickers on it for help #s and stuff like that. It such a pretty machine. I have named her Betsy. She runs smooth like butter. I tested each of the 180 stitches and they all worked perfect. I love using this machine. It actually has all the features listed. For all the stitches built into the machine, they have provided you with each of sewing feet that are needed. Which are in the accessory bag located inside the removable arm of the machine. It works just as great as those other expensive machines, except it's lighter and less expensive and looks just as pretty.. This machine has made me love Sewing more and more each day I have used it. It has all the features and accessories that are mentioned in the description box. The machines box says its refurbished but that's all that you notice. It was was packed very well and I was happy with that. Its soooo pretty to look at. It will definitely dress up any sewing area/room. I suggest making a cover for it, so it will be dust free. Using this machine in the past few days that I had it made me feel like a real seamstress. Brother is my favorite brand. I also have a Brother embroidery machine, which I love as well. This brand seems to always been reliable and very easy to use and full of features. I needed to upgrade from a manual sewing machine. Anyone who purchases this machine will we very happy just like i am. This was an early birthday gift from my son, so this is also why it is also very special to me. I hope everyone enjoys this review. It was pleasing to be able to write about this product. Thank you Overstock for offering a great product and such a wonderfully affordable price. Have a great Day!!!

This machine has some excellent features making threading the needle and loading the bobbin a cinch for those of us with glasses/an unsteady hand. It has 3 speed settings with the slow being SLOW. I haven't dared use the highest speed as the middle seems quite fast enough. It is quiet and stable. There are more than enough stitches. The instructions are detailed, easy to read and understand. Stitch selections are easy to make and adjust. The LED screen is bright and large. I like the operating light, too. It is a bluish color making it easier to see the stitches against the fabric. Clever. There is also a feature that allows you to use it without the foot pedal but I haven't braved it yet. Overall, I am more than satisfied. Now, I just hope it is durable.

I went for a few bells and whistles with this choice. I love the table for extra room. The only reason I gave it a 4 was because of the monogram stitches. They are very small & I haven’t found a way to make them any larger. The decorative stitches make for fun borders. The dvd is very helpful. My son and I recovered his truck seats with leather using this machine. It sewed right over those thick seams with a walking foot & teflon foot. Lightweight and easy to carry.

  • 25 Year Factory Warranty, NOT 20 - Factory Refurb
    Verified Purchase

After trying desperately to get a copy of the warranty and clarification about it being a factor refurb prior to sale I took a chance and ordered this. It arrived and turns out to be a factory refurb with a 25-year (very) limited warranty. It's really just one year parts and labor - 25 years is for the non-mechanical frame. Still, despite the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act requiring that written warranties be inspectable by consumers prior to purchase, Overstock would not supply the written warranty and their information on the site is very confusing - saying there is a 20-year factory warranty. The 25 year warranty is available for review on the Brother web site. So, in the end, things turned out very well, and delivery was quick and the product is excellent for the price. Overstock needs to correct the information on their site regarding this product, at least, and perhaps for other Brother products where the warranty is 25 years, not the 20 that they state on the site. The product is 100% complete and works as advertised - many features for not very much money, and the refurb pricing is superb. Will it last long-term? Impossible to say at this point.

I bought the sewing machine for my 9yr old daughter (and myself). We are sewing novices. It took a little time to follow the instructions for threading the bobbin and the top thread. But after we figured these out, choosing stitches, length, width, and tension was a breeze. The machine looked brand new! Well worth the price. Highly recommend the brand and style for beginners and for moms who always need to sew something around the house.

It says refurbished, but it came out of the box looking brand new, had all accessories and manuals with it! And it's very easy to use, the DVD made it easy. Would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Hello Mimi, thank you for shopping with us. You can purchase the walking foot from Brother. Have a great day.

    • A:

Mimi, this machine does not have a walking foot. However, mine came with a quilting foot and the feed dogs can be lowered so you can use the machine that way if you wanted. The manual lists the walking foot as an "optional accessory" using part number SA140... Hope this helps. AA

  • Q:

"I have asked if assorted feet come with this machine. Would an instruction manual be included also? Barbara (Feb 22, 2016)"

    • A:

Yes it comes with a lot of accessories in a pouch that's stored in a compartment right below the bobbin, including about 7 different types of feet. There is an instruction manual included and it's very helpful, especially for a novice sewer like me. Also it says refurbished but the machine is brand new, in all new packaging. There was an explanation I read in one of the reviews for what "refurbished" meant but it doesn't seem like it's used at all.

"I note this machine is refurbished. Does this machine come with feet that can be changed for different sewing?"

Yes, it comes with everything that would come with one that is not re-furbished at least mine did. It also came with an instruction manual.
