I love this sewing machine. I had never used a sewing machine before and this one was pretty simple to learn. I still a lot to learn but I do recommend it.

I'm not an expert seamstress, but have used a simple sewing machine before. This machine is pretty great, especially the fact that it is able to thread the needle itself. I have used the embroidery feature quite a bit - there is a steep learning curve and some threads work better than others, but I'm getting the hang of it.

nice product on;y fault is that if the thread breaks it stops but doesnt allow you to go back to where it broke and sew from there so where the thread broke you end up with missed stitches on the finished embroidery pattern. i love that i can hook it up to my computer and have access to a lot of patterns

Great little beginner machine. Easy to learn and operate. It is not difficult to change between seeing and embroidery. Very easy to transfer embroidery patterns. Downfalls would be the screen is black and white and difficult to see transferred designs. Stitches beautifully, so overall it’s a great beginner machine. I upgraded quickly to the PE770 but this one is a great combination seeing and embroidery machine.

I bought the Brother SE400 without having any sewing experience. The instruction CD was a huge help and I've mostly been using the embroidery function (which is the primary reason I purchased the machine). It's been so much easier to use than I ever expected and I've learned on my own how to applique and embroider. It's been so much fun and I can't wait to learn new techniques and improve on my recently learned skills.

  • The best sewing machine EVER

This is the best sewing maching I've ever used. The ease of changing stitches (from zig zag to straight, for example) is fantastic; the ease of changing the foot from regular to zipper is incredible; winding bobbins is easy and the drop-in bobbin feature is wonderful. The self-threader is something I didn't know I needed until I had it! No more squinting at the needle or hoping my arthritis doesn't kick in. The embroidery features are wonderful, and it is incredibly easy to hook up a laptop for downloaded patterns. I've just about finished my first major project with this machine (a Civil War uniform) and have been absolutely delighted. The machine tells you when your bobbin thread is about to run out, so no more surprises! I highly recommend this machine, and the price is amazing on Overstock!

I bought this machine for the embroidery function, which is great. What I didn't realize is what a great sewing machine this is. I have been using it for my regular sewing in addition to embroidery. The internet is filled with free designs that you can use on this machine and the USB connection to a computer makes it so easy.

This machine is very user-friendly. I have never operated a sewing machine in my life, but was able to get everything working right out of the box. The embroidery is very intuitive as well.

I am new the sewing world and I love my new machine. I've downloaded a bunch of embroidery designs and I am like a kid in a candy store! For a beginer machine I think its wonderful, if your looking for something to do big designs you need to go to a bigger machine. This machine does designs no larger than 4x4. You will enjoy it!!

Manual just said change the needle for it.

  • Q:

"I want to embroider peoples first names on Xmas stockings I make. But 4x4 doesn't seem big enough space to fit a name. Can I not use the hoop snd just embroider over my own penciled in name?"

    • A:

Some people do what is called "floating". They just use the part of the hoop that is attached to the machine, use sticky stabilizer or some sticky spray adhesive. However, you still are only limited to the 4x4 because the machine is programmed only up to 4x4. Also, some people split designs so they can use, say, 5x7 hoop. But that takes practice, patience and sometimes does not achieve the results you want. I did some stockings when I first had this machine and although I was limited to 4x4, I stitched out 3 x3 names and it looked fine.

    • A:

There are additional larger hoops you can buy to have more space to work with, that will probably be your best option. I purchased a 4"x 6.75" hoop on Amazon. It basically has two positions, you stitch out the first half of your design in Position 1 then move the hoop up to Position 2 and stitch out the second half. There are good videos on YouTube that show you how to split designs.
