    • Great book, NOT LIKE THE MOVIE
      Verified Purchase

This book is a series of stories told to a UN attache years after the rise and fall of a zombie breakout. It's told chronologically, told by people from all walks of life, with many different professions - the chinese doctor who was one of the first to see a zombie, the soldier who fought an epic battle humans lost, the ex-pat self-exiled on the south pole who saw a zombie outbreak to sell essentially a placebo as a vaccine against zombies. Some of the characters tell more than one story, others you hear from just once. They all have powerful stories to tell and have strong voices, so for me it was easy to keep everyone straight. While the subjects are being interviewed, technically, the interviewer literally doesn't have much of a presence. Every once in a while the story interrupts when he asks a question, but the impression you get is that he just put down a tape recorder and asked the interviewee for stories. The thing that is also fascinating about the story is the geopolitical reaction to the zombies. Some countries (Israel), take the early rumors seriously and declare a self-imposed quarantine. Others are too busy blaming other countries and denying reports of outbreaks. If you have seen the movie but have not read the book, the book is completely different. The movie is told from the point of view of the UN attache (Brad Pitt's character), and is situated in time at the very, very beginning of the outbreak. So you might be disappointed reading the book because it's not the UN attache's story, it's the story of about 20-25 other people. Even though there's no chance people will become infected and come to life, some kind of viral outbreak is possible. So this book does get the reader wondering what he/she might do in the event of a worldwide pandemic.
