"I Believe I Can Fly" won the 1998 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television, and was nominated for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. "Fly Like An Eagle" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. "Space Jam" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. The movie sets Michael Jordan in the midst of an animated basketball team made up of classic Looney Toons characters. The soundtrack finds some equally unlikely settings for rap, soul and hip-hop songs and their singers. Among the inspired covers here are Seal's smooth, funky take on Steve Miller's classic-rock chestnut "Fly Like An Eagle"; the Spin Doctors' spin on "That's The Way (I Like It)" (on which they're joined by rapper Biz Markie); and a hilarious remake of Cheech & Chong's comedy classic "Basketball Jones" by Barry White and a fast-talking Chris Rock. Bugs Bunny provides a straightforward rap track, "Buggin'," with the help of Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig. The soundtrack, like the film, is full of energy and silliness, but there are moments of genuine sweetness: All-4-One's earnest and soulful "I Turn To You" and R. Kelly's gospel-inspired "I Can Fly." Personnel: D'Angelo (vocals, keyboards); R. Kelly (vocals, programming); Delious (vocals); Danny Kortchmar, Michael Thompson , Mike Campbell , Nile Rodgers , Seal (guitar); Mike Scott (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Paul Riser (strings); Erik Lawrence , Andrew Lippman, Todd Horton (horns); Rashad Smith, Armando Colon (keyboards, drums); Ivan Neville, Percy Bady, Terry Burrus, Billy Steele, David Foster (keyboards); Earl Harvin (drums); Jamey Jaz, Mr. Lee, Stephen George (programming); Alexander Richbourg, Poke, Tone (drum programming); Jeff Pescetto, Caitlin Cornwell, Zoe Ellis, Lynette Holmes, Naimeh Heath, Mikelyn Roderick, The Luv Club, K.E.I., Robin S., Sue Ann Carwell (background vocals). Space Jam is a captivating, engaging, and expressive work inspired from the making of the motion picture of the same name, featuring basketball icon Michael Jordan and a cast of charming Looney Tunes personalities. It is a collection of enthusiasm and charm, bold in expression and passionate in both it's lyrical quality and amazing variety of artists, bringing forth a broad landscape of musical style and form. Seal opens up the jam with the universally appealing single "Fly Like an Eagle." Coolio addresses the listeners and a generation of youth about the satisfaction of being a winner, and the mood of the song creates a great sense of belief in oneself, energizing one to genuinely work to accomplish and be a meaningful success in life.
