Adapter: Doc Watson. Personnel: Mimi Fari¤a (vocals, guitar); Richard Fari¤a (vocals, dulcimer); Ian Tyson, Sylvia Fricker (guitar, 12-string guitar, autoharp); Monte Dunn, John Herald (guitar); Bruce Langhorne (electric guitar, tambourine); John Hammond, Sr. (harmonica); Charles Small (piano); Russ Savakus (electric bass); Alvin Rogers (drums). Liner Note Author: Tom Vickers. Photographers: David Gahr; Diana Davies; John Cooke. Unknown Contributor Roles: Donovan; Earl Scruggs; Hamilton Camp; Merle Watson; Pete Seeger ; Theodore Bikel; Merle Travis; Bob Dylan. Arranger: Doc Watson. As a compilation, this 20-track disc is one of the better recent Vanguard releases, assembling a quartet of key Ian & Sylvia (including "You Were On My Mind" and "Someday Soon") and Mimi and Richard Farina songs, alongside duets between Bob Dylan and Joan Baez at Newport, Bob Gibson and Hamilton Camp, Dylan and Pete Seeger, Flatt & Scruggs, and Doc and Merle Watson. In essence, Vanguard has distilled down some of the highlights of its early catalog and its recent box sets (Joan Baez and Donovan together), and remastered some of the early stuff that needed it. There isn't much more to tell that isn't self-explanatory, except that the range of styles here makes this a good profile of the early 1960s folk boom in all its myriad forms, and a decent starter kit to the rest of the Vanguard catalog from that era. ~ Bruce Eder

I came upon this by accident--while looking for another item for a gift. I bought this for myself. It should appeal a lot, as it did for me, to people who lived the folk music revival--and loved every minute of it. But it was also in my car's CD player when I was driving an 11 year old heavy metal fan to school, and she was toe-tapping to the music. Its not all polished products but worth the listen anyway. I specially enjoyed an obviously impromptu duet between impossibly young Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Not for the artistry in the performance but because it revealed a lot--her trying to be 'ethereal' and his hogging the lion share of the song and sort of bellowing over her. Pictures of things to come...
