Additional personnel: Dave Chappelle (spoken vocals). Wouldn't it be great to be famous, throw a party, and invite all your favorite musicians to perform for you and your friends? Dave Chapelle thinks so, too, so he threw just such a party in the summer of 2005--in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY--and invited not only his friends but a whole bunch of people he didn't know. A self-professed hip-hop head, Chapelle asked some of the finest and most respected artists in the game--including the Roots, Black Star, Jill Scott, and Common--to provide the music for his little soiree. There's very little thug or hardcore posturing present on any of these tracks (or in the film version of the Party directed by Michel Gondry). Instead, the hip-hop here is socially conscious, groove-oriented, and reflective of the old-school virtues of the hip-hop community. Jill Scott and Erykah Badu bring a taste of sharp-edged R&B to the proceedings, while Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, and Dead Prez keep the raps fluid and consistent throughout this dynamic, good-times throwback of a set.

An excellent supplement to the "Block Party" movie because it allows you to hear the unedited performances of the artists. The only downfall is that it does not include the performances of the Fugees nor Kanye West, but Jill Scott and Mos Def were phenomenal!!!
