Henci Goer is a certified Lamaze instructor and a doula (professional labor support). She is a founding member of the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services, a group made up of organizations and individuals involved with maternity care in the US and fighting for a mother-friendly childbirth environment. Her articles on pregnancy and childbirth have appeared in Readers Digest and Childbirth Instructor Magazine. For twenty years, Goer has been a Lamaze-certified childbirth educator and labor support professional (doula).
As an intelligent woman, you are probably used to learning as much as you can before making major decisions. But when it comes to one of the most important decisions of your life--how you will give birth?it is hard to gather accurate, unbiased information. I bought this book for my 3 baby. I had already had two babies, both induced, both very mechanical in nature. I was not granola mom looking to suck up pain, but I wanted to have some feeling of control for this last baby. I had managed to have every high risk I could think of, I'd had pain meds once and a really sick baby the second time. My goal was to figure out why and avoid it. This book did that for me. Not only that, but I was able to have the unthinkable, a spontaneous pain free and pain med free birth. WTG Goer for empowering women and allowing them informed choices.

This book gave me all of the information I needed to make decisions about the birth of my first child. Although I needed to have a c-section in the end, I felt that I had exhausted all other possibilities and that I was involved in the final decision - thus relieving me of feeling like the situation had been taken out of my hands. I wish I could have had a totally natural delivery of my baby Theo, but I rest easily knowing that I did try as hard as I could to do that and had great support, including this book.
