Stieg Larsson, who lived in Sweden, was the editor in chief of the magazineExpo and a leading expert on antidemocratic, right-wing extremist and Nazi organizations. He died in 2004, shortly after delivering the manuscripts forThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

    From the Hardcover edition.
Lisbeth Salander—the heart of Larsson’s two previous novels—lies in critical condition, a bullet wound to her head, in the intensive care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She’s fighting for her life in more ways than one: if and when she recovers, she’ll be taken back to Stockholm to stand trial for three murders. With the help of her friend, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those in authority who have allowed the vulnerable, like herself, to suffer abuse and violence. And, on her own, she will plot revenge—against the man who tried to kill her, and the corrupt government institutions that very nearly destroyed her life.

Once upon a time, she was a victim. Now Salander is fighting back.

These books are tough to read because of the subject matter and because of the fact that they are translated from the original Swedish. They involve Swedish politics and laws which as an American seemed odd to me. In the first book, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the male lead character is jailed for libel of a corporation, which would be a civil matter in the US but not a criminal offense. But I read the books three times and by the third time, I really appreciated the description of life in Sweden and it's court system and understood how it was an integral part of the unfolding of the story. As you read the three books, you realize that Steig Larsson probably intended to write at least one more book but he died before that happened. This book is very rich and the story line helps us find vindication for the central character, Lisbeth Salander. She is quite possibly the most complex, interesting, and sympathetic strong female character in modern literature. She is damaged, but not willing to allow herself to be a victim of her circumstances. I'll miss her as I would have liked to know where her journey would take her.

Price was better than costco. I thought the book was very well written and suspenseful. I don't always agree with the reviews I read on other books but this I am sharing with friends. I much prefer a book on cd-it fits better into my lifestyle even though the price is more than for even a hardcover.

    • Book great -- poor shipping
      Verified Purchase

The book is great and the reader is good as well. At least 4 stars for the book --- but read the first two in the series before this one! The only problem with ordering books from overstock is that shipping takes WEEKS! I thought it was a fluke with the first books I ordered (as other items always arrive quite promptly), but nope. Books seem to have to use the pony express for delivery. I won't be ordering books from overstock again.
