Marjane Satrapi was born in Rasht, Iran. She now lives in Paris, where she is a regular contributor to magazines and newspapers throughout the world, includingThe New Yorker, and The New York Times. She is the author of Embroideries, Chicken with Plums, and several children's books. She cowrote and codirected the animated feature film version ofPersepolis.
Here, in one volume: Marjane Satrapi's best-selling, internationally acclaimed memoir-in-comic-strips.

Persepolis is the story of Satrapi's unforgettable childhood and coming of age within a large and loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private life and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trials of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming--both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland. It is the chronicle of a girlhood and adolescence at once outrageous and familiar, a young life entwined with the history of her country yet filled with the universal trials and joys of growing up.

Edgy, searingly observant, and candid, often heartbreaking but threaded throughout with raw humor and hard-earned wisdom--Persepolis is a stunning work from one of the most highly regarded, singularly talented graphic artists at work today.

Well-written. Easy-to-follow. Extremely interesting. These are just a few words that come to mind as I think about this story/novel. Though the content is of a serious nature, Marjane Satrapi found a way to take the edge off her story by changing the format - using a comic strip was simply genious! Her unconventional use of pictures to tell her intriguing story was helpful because my mind didn't wander as much as I read. Also, her use of humor throughout the novel gave me the sense that she knew that things would get better eventually if she just held on to her faith. This, along with the fact that she didn't attempt to be politically correct in telling her story, helped me to feel more connected to her experience . Finally, I admire her honesty as she describes each experience she encountered and how it influenced her thoughts/actions. This is the most interesting autobiography I have ever read. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did.
