Alan Parker's THE COMMITMENTS, based on Roddy Doyle's buoyant debut novel, follows the enjoyable travails of a band cobbled together by young Jimmy Rabbitte (Robert Arkins), whose vision is to bring soul music to Dublin. After putting an ad in the local paper, Jimmy assembles an unlikely group of musicians who, though nervous, raw, and rough, make music that speaks to something very near the heart of their audience of curious kids and sharp-tongued, sarcastic relatives. As the band nears its big break, egos clash and expectations of fame and fortune start to tear them apart, forcing Jimmy to fight desperately to keep them together.

THE COMMITMENTS bubbles over with life, largely on the strength of the young, mostly unknown cast. Andrew Strong shines in the role of the lead singer exuding a volatile and irresistible charisma as he transforms rapidly from an unsure adolescent into an egotistical spotlight hogger. Colm Meaney contributes a hilarious cameo as Jimmy's father (a role that would expand in two later film adaptations of Doyle novels, THE SNAPPER and THE VAN). Pumped along by killer 1960s soul tunes and crackling throughout with quick-witted dialogue, THE COMMITMENTS is an effervescent, affecting tour through working-class Dublin.

If you haven't turned any one on to "The Commitments" yet why not? This is undoubtedly one of the best rock-n-roll movies ever made. The cast is outstanding, the story line is wonderful, the symbolism is undeniable, and the music is absolutely classic. It's the story of several young Irish musicians as they make a name for themselves as "the saviors of soul". If you love the fun and soulful sounds of Martha and the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Otis Redding, et al, then I highly recommend this movie for you, your friends and family members. Not for children as it has an "R" rating, but it's great fun and would make a perfect gift.

  • The Commitments- Dublin Soul
    Verified Purchase

If you have ever had nothing, but wanted to risk everything, then The Commitments will tell your story. If you love soul, or just music in general then definetly see this movie. Directed by Alan Parker who set the film in Dublin, Ireland, put together a powerhouse cast to make this film possible. The movie focuses on Jimmy Rabbitte played by Robert Arkins. A young man who has big dreams but little to show for it. So, instead of always dreaming he puts together a group of nobodys who wanted to become somebody by bringing the sounds of soul to Dublin. As the manager he offers humor and seriousness to the film as he struggles to keep them afloat. The band itself was unique as well, all actors needed musical ability, and they had a spark with people like Deco Cuff (lead singer) played by Andrew Strong and Joey 'The Lips' Fagan (trumpet) played by Johnny Murphy. Colm Meany even played the part as the father of Jimmy Rabbitte. The Commitments speaks to the heart, mind and sense of humor. It proves you need to follow your dreams, but also to be careful what you wish for. Don't miss it!
