Burton Richardson's love of the martial arts inspired him to live in abject poverty in one of the worst areas of Los Angeles in order to train full-time in every martial art he could. His main instructor Dan Inosanto (the man Bruce Lee chose to carry on Lee's art and philosophy of Jeet Kune Do) groomed Burton to become an instructor, and after a decade of intense training, Burton went from traveling the globe learning martial arts to teaching seminars worldwide.

Burton continued his zeal for research as he began writing his popular monthly column in Inside Kung-Fu magazine. In 2000 Burton was voted "Writer of the Year" and now has three books published, one translated into five languages. He also has very popular instructional DVDs that sell worldwide. He immediately caught the Mixed Martial Arts wave, coaching his first champion in 1996. You can now see him regularly on Pay-Per-View events coaching top UFC fighters.

Burton also appeared in numerous films, and was the fight choreographer on Seven. He has worked with Brandon Lee, Keanu Reeves, Steven Segal, Keenan Ivory Wayans, and Kris Kristofferson.

Burton lives with his wife Sarah and their little girl Talina Queen in Kailua, Hawaii where he continues his quest for constant martial and personal development.
The Blueprint For Modern Self Defense: Adopting The Martial Way Of Life, is the most complete manual ever written on functional self-defense and its application to everyday life. From gun and knife defense, to street kickboxing, street clinching, takedowns, and street ground work, this book has something for everyone interested in a realistic approach to both self defense and the martial way of life.

In The Blueprint For Modern Self Defense: Adopting The Martial Way Of Life, Burton Richardson brings his science-based philosophy of practical self-defense training to you. A leading instructor in JKD Concepts, Filipino Kali, Indonesian Silat, and Thai kickboxing, a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and an elite level MMA coach, Richardson combines ancient warrior arts with the modern approach of Mixed Martial Arts so the entire gamut of street self-defense is covered. Instead of only presenting techniques, important combat principles, tactics, and the all-important training methods are covered in great depth as well.

Nothing in the book is theoretical—everything has been repeatedly tested at 100% intensity against top MMA athletes to ensure that the techniques will work in a real world situation. In the era of mixed martial arts, where many unsavory individuals now train to fight, having an MMA-based approach that goes beyond the rules of the sport is vital to ensure your success in a street situation.

Burton's emphasis on only using what works goes beyond fighting proficiency. "You may never have to use your self defense skills in the street, but the principles of success you learn through practical training can be used every day of your life."
