In the year 2136, galactic bounty hunter Wolff (Peter Strauss) answers a distress signal which leads him to the plague-ridden planet Terra Eleven to rescue three beautiful young women. Before Wolff arrives, however, the women are captured by the evil half-man/half-machine Overdog (Michael Ironside). As Wolff tries to track the captive women, he must fight various mutants and monsters. Along the way he meets Niki (Molly Ringwald), a tough orphan who aids him in reaching Overdog's menacing scrap-metal kingdom. SPACEHUNTER was presented in 3D during its 1983 theatrical release.

The movie comes as no surprise to me, as I enjoyed watching it in the early eighties. Features a cast of well knowns like Peter Strauss, a young Molly Ringwald, Michael Ironside, Ernie Hudson and executive producer Ivan Reitman. Strauss plays deep space salvager who answers a call for help. A luxury space liner is attacked and three women escape its destruction in lifeboats but end up on terra 11 from a plague ridden planet ruled by an insane former scientist who prolongs his life by draining the life force of youthful women. Strauss and his android companion put down and begin their rescue quest. Along the way they encounter some of the planets peoples, along with Molly Ringwald's character and Ernie Hudson, a competing salvager. They discover the story behind the Ruthless ruler played by Micheal Ironside, and his kingdom inside of the forbidden zone. The place appears to be a cross between some post apocalyptic world and an overrun industrial wasteland. No digitial effects here, all done by more traditional means, but still not too bad. Its not star wars but its not the main focus of the story. Its a traditional battle of good versus evil. Nothing too strong for younger viewers. If you consider the fact that Ghost busters Ivan reitman was the executive producer, its not meant to be too serious, or violent, or gory. Its a friendly romp and some nostalgic fun for some, and maybe pure cheese to others, but its good enough to add to my library of 'drive in' type movies. Better than some newer movies shown on the sci-fi channel. Entertaining enough and worth the price to own.
