JOHN L. BULL, a self-taught ornithologist and popular field-guide writer, was born in Manhattan on February 28, 1914. He served as a research asisstant at the American Museum of Natural History in the 1960s and 70s, and led many birding tours in Long Island and New York City. He died in August 2006 at the age of ninety-two.

JOHN FARRAND, JR. (1937-1994) studied at the University of Oklahoma and Louisiana State University. He served as Zoologist at the Smithsonian and was a curatorial assistant at the American Museum of Natural History.
Introduced in 1977 and completely revised in 1994, these bestselling photographic field guides have become the birding bibles of more than four million enthusiasts. Virtually every bird found in North America is brought to life in a full-color photograph and with textual information on the bird's voice, nesting habits, habitat, range, and interesting behaviors. Accompanying range maps; overhead flight silhouettes; sections on bird-watching, accidental species, and endangered birds make these the most comprehensive field guides to birds available.

Note: the Eastern Edition generally covers states east of the Rocky Mountains, while the Western Edition covers the Rocky Mountain range and all the states to the west of it.

Love the size of the book and yet it has so much information of our birds. It has most of the birds in our area, (Michigan) with great pictures and then information about their habitat and deiscription as well as sightings.

Spent 4 months on my back deck recovering from surgery and surrounded by all kinds of birds. This book was easy to use to find the type of bird I was wanting to identify as well as informative. I used it a lot and was very excited to have it o hand whenever a new visitor dropped in. It is very well organized. Set up for wuick reference and the pictures are clear and so helpful.
