Jeffrey Eugenides was born in Detroit and attended Brown and Stanford Universities. His first novel,The Virgin Suicides, was published by Farrar Straus & Giroux to great acclaim in 1993, and he has received numerous awards for his work. In 2003, Jeffrey Eugenides received The Pulitzer Prize for his novelMiddlesex (Picador, 2003). Middlesex, which was also a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, France's Prix Medicis, has sold over 1 million copies.

"I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day of January 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of l974. . . My birth certificate lists my name as Calliope Helen Stephanides. My most recent driver's license...records my first name simply as Cal."

So begins the breathtaking story of Calliope Stephanides and three generations of the Greek-American Stephanides family who travel from a tiny village overlooking Mount Olympus in Asia Minor to Prohibition-era Detroit, witnessing its glory days as the Motor City, and the race riots of l967, before they move out to the tree-lined streets of suburban Grosse Pointe, Michigan. To understand why Calliope is not like other girls, she has to uncover a guilty family secret and the astonishing genetic history that turns Callie into Cal, one of the most audacious and wondrous narrators in contemporary fiction. Lyrical and thrilling,Middlesex is an exhilarating reinvention of the American epic.

Middlesex is the winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

    • great read

I could NOT put this book down. Picked it up because it was written by the same author as Virgin Sucides (another great book). It took the author nearly 5 years to write this book and it was well worth the wait. Don't let the topic scare you. It isn't about the he/she sleeping around or anything like that. It's a great story of someone finding themselves and then finding their family history. The story jumps from generations, but personally I couldn't put the book down because I was so interested to get back to each of the stories within the book.Great Read!Pick it up and Enjoy! And u cant beat overstock's price!

Often times I was very confused with this book. I seemed to jump around alot and was just very hard for me to get into. Not something you should pick up if your looking for a light easy read but if your interested in trangender issues then obviously this book tells a good story.
