When a group ofintrepid gold prospectors set up camp at the fork of the Snake and ClearwaterRivers in 1861, they expected to make camp for a night and move on. Instead, they made a town. It was an important—if unintended—accomplishment. And it wasonly the beginning of a long line of historic firsts for Lewiston, includingthe first capital, police department, newspaper and post office. Lewiston alsoboasted the state’s first brewery and first vigilante association, both foundedin the same year, appropriately enough. Join local historian and lifelongeducator Steven D. Branting as he offers the first-ever chronology ofunprecedented events, accolades and incidents that shaped Lewiston and Idahofrom the city’s founding to the present day.

This book is the result of six months of careful research and documentation. As I say in the preface: American humorist Will Rogers once quipped: “It’s not what you don’t know that hurts you; it’s what you do know that ain’t so.” A failure to clearly annotate historical research with primary sources perpetuates speculation, misinterpretations and poor scholarship. The reader will find citations provided for most of the entries. Future historians deserve to know my sources, especially when that information relates to junctures of circumstances in the record of events. Enjoy a timeline of achievements. I hope this book encourages other historians to tackle local histories with a renewed vigor. Too much of hometown America is being lost to the effects of anecdotal fog.

If you live in or near Lewiston, Idaho, or are an expatriate, Golden Bengal (you will know who you are), then this book is for you. Lewiston is the cradle of Idaho history. With the Idaho Territory Sesquicentennial ready to begin, what better way to know your own history. But I am biased; I wrote the book and enjoyed first the excitement of finding all of the accomplishments.
